This situation came up yesterday:UTG raises all-in 275, it folds around to me on the button. 400 is in the pot and it's 200 for me to call (nice round numbers). I look at 89suited and I'm getting 2:1 from the pot.UTG is slightly short stacked, but not badly. I'm maybe the big stack, but if so just barely. I have about 400 plus the blind so calling would be putting in about 1/2 my stack. 6 players are left.I play with UTG a lot and know him well. In this situation I can almost guarantee that he's playing either a small pair or a big ace. I'm not worried about JJ through AA. I'm almost certain he's playing 44 through 10s, or AQ, AJ.Against 4s through 7s it's a coin flip, against 2 overs I'm 3:2. There are 3 hands I fear, 8s, 9s, or 10s, although of all the possible hands I would consider these the least likely. In a cash game I'd be making this call everytime against this player in this situation (and have an expected profit). However, I've been debating whether I should have made this call or not. UTG was my biggest threat at the table and if I knock him out here I'd be in an excellent position to win the tournament. However, if I lose I'm in the short stack and won't be able to attack the increasing blinds. If I fold I'm still in a good position and still the favorite to win, but only marginally.I wanted to know what you folks think of the situation. Please assume my read is right and that I'm not going up against KK and in a world of trouble. I think I'm almost certainly getting pot odds to call, but that in itself isn't enough.
(not using) pot odds in a tournament situation?
