If Full Tilt, Pokerstars, Bodog and even UB sponsor players, why doesn't the casinos get into it? Why doesn't the Bellagio sponsor someone like Barry G? If random donk watches TV and sees that his favorite player has a Caesar's shirt on, he might be more apt to play at Caesar's so that maybe he can play with his favorite pro. Is there something I'm missing here?

I think the Wynn tried this with some random donk. wink.gif

Didn't work out as well as they'd thought.

It has probably been thought about. Remember dn was the wynn "poker ambassador" for a while.
The trouble is that most of the big names are already taken by online sites.

The Grinder used to be sponsored by Planet Hollywood too.

Im not sure why its not more common. Part of it may be that the casinos want their sponsored players to play exclusively at their casino, like what the Wynn wanted DN to do, or play there atleast once a week like what PH wanted the Grinder to do. This becomes a problem when the name players are playing around the world and want to play games that arent available at the casino that is sponsoring them. Still it does seem surprising that players dont wear the casinos logos for money in deals where the player can still play wherever he wants.

Also for the casinos point of view poker is still a very small part of their income and maybe its not worth it to them where as a site like Full Tilt derives all of its income from people playing poker.

Wouldnt a player be able to have a online and live sponsor, but I guess you do have a point because iirc both the grinder and Scotty have both been sponsored by casinos at times where they werent sponsored by online sites.

Certain casinos employed poker players to play in games. I read about it a while ago but basically they paid them an hourly and they had to work at certain times and move tables and stakes or games (plo to razz) to keep tables going or start games up.

Not really sponsoring but close.

Certain big names pros could get sponsored by casinos but this would probably cost them money in the long run by inhibiting them from playing at certain times or certain games. This was the reason DN gave up his deal even though he tried his hardest to generate action with the HU challenge.

I'm sure it's 100% financial on the part of the casino:

If an online poker site sponsors someone and they make a final table where 500,000 people see it, let's say that 2% of those people are not already signed up with an online site and/or decide to switch after seeing the player at the final table with the Full Tilt logos. Those 1000 players log on, sign up, play, etc. Some may stay, some may not. Whatever. Full Tilt gets more traffic and more exposure and more rake and more money.

If the same thing happened, but it was advertising for The Bellagio, do you really think that many people are gonna fly to Vegas and go to The Bellagio and lose enough money to make sponsoring that player worth it?

I would just think that for caisnos, there's almost no way for the advertising to generate enough income to make it worthwhile.

If a casino such as The Bellagio were to sponsor a big pro, than that player would be forced to play all cash games at the bellagio. So if there's a game happening at The Venetian he wouldn't get to play. I'm sure for that reason alone most players would be turned off and prefer online sponsorships.

The casino advertises by hosting an event like the WSOP... Harrah's doesn't need to have patches on everyone, the Rio is going to get mentioned a million times. Also, would Harrah's let someone advertise for a competitor during its event?

The DN and Grinder deals were to try to get people into that room who were already in Vegas. I'm sure it worked to an extent - I'd be more likely to go play the Wed evening tourney at PH if I knew Grinder was going to be playing.

There were only two problems - 1 he wasn't there that often since he was traveling for big tourneys and such.
And - as with DN at Wynn - he got bored of the small stakes and didn't play "seriously". Sure it's probably +EV to sit with DN at the table when he's blind shoving every hand at 1/3 NL but it's not the same as taking a hand off of him when he's playing for real.

I don't think the casinos need more people to play in their casinos to make money (although the same can be said with pokerstars or fulltilt).

Are there really back to back posts from people with Kung Fu Panda avatars?

The thought of seeing that movie never even occurred to me tbh.

Since most high profile poker player have deals with online sites most casinos will stay away from sponsoring players until the UIEGA gets figured out. Just MO.
