Home Game Gun Etiquette And Other Decisions

Recommended Posts

This sort of came up in another topic and is likely to be a bit controversial. While in most Right to Carry States you cannot carry a concealed weapon in places like Casinos or Bars, you can get a permit to carry in many other circumstances. I think the first rule is "avoidance". Simply don't carry cash or play in games where you feel unsafe. However just feeling safe vs. unsafe isn't the issue - if you choose to exercise your right to carry, what other factors influence your decisions and actions?I am not talkig about growing "Lead Balls" to make yourself feel tougher or encourage getting into altercations. If I host a game or other event where there is alcohol - I'd like to know who is carrying in my home. I think it is a courtesy to inform a home owner if you are bringing a gun into their home. If the homeowner objects - then you can refuse the invite or leave your weapon in some other safe place while in the house. What do you think about Carrying during play?

I think that anybody who enters another person's home at any time while armed without getting specific permission of the homeowner should be shot.

IMO, if the money is that important (or that much) that you need to carry or pull a gun on someone when something happens, find somewhere else to play poker that's regulated. Bringing a gun to a poker game is just shady, and I think it would make everyone there feel uneasy. If you're playing nosebleed stakes at some underground casino, sure, bring a gun. But I'm not going to bring one to a $1/$2 NL game with the intent on letting it help me get my way.

Not at all.I am a responsible gun owner - there are a lot of us here in the States. The SCotUS just confirmed our Individual rights to own guns. I have a Permit to Legally carry a concealed weapon. As do many millions of others in this country. Assuming we are going to exercise those rights I thought it would be interesting to discuss some rules of Etiquette regarding Home Games. If you're anti-gun, fine. I'm not.

I isn't just a matter of "Safe vs. unsafe" - I know people who have a gun 100% of the time they are legally allowed to carry it. They exercise that right as much as possible. Why would a Home Game be any different than heading out to the store or taking the dog for a walk? When I carried more often, I didn't go that far, but I did carry more often than not.

Who said they are anti-gun?It's just stupid to bring one to a poker game. It's also stupid to carry one around 24/7... for what purpose? Just because you can doesn't mean it makes any sense.

brag post?Homeowner should be notified, otherwise it's not anyone's business if I'm carrying.

Yes, but carrying a gun while walking the dog and having a gun at a place where there are strangers and a good amount of money is different. I know people that carry (my stepdad's cousin, for example) and it's fine when we're just sitting at someones house or if theyre going to the store. But if I see someone with a gun at a midstakes cash game with a bunch of teenagers and other people that would be easy to rob, well, it's frightening.

Ummmm. Why would you need to carry a gun to a home game?If I were running a game and someone decided to bring there new gun to show off. Cool. If I found that a friend of mine sat strapped at my game because they were afraid of something popping off, I would call them a psychiatrist.

There is a definite difference in gun culture between Canada and the US and I'm not going to get into the debate over how much gun control is a good thing as I think everybody agrees that some level of control is a good thing but whether that level is no flamethrowers but everything else is okay or nobody should own guns at all is the range of people's feelings.I do think it's extremely arrogant and selfish to think that your right to carry a concealed weapon extends to somebody else's home without the permission of the homeowner though. In a homegame situation the person running the game may desire that you are there with your weapon since many games do get robbed but whether having the players armed when that happens is a good or bad thing is a debate that I don't want to get into.In Canada the only people who are carrying concealed guns are criminals basically as it's pretty much impossible to get a carry permit.

QFT.... I aggry to a certain extent that you could keep a gun in your house for safety, if that's ur thing and all, but bringing a gun to a "friendly" poker game is just plain stupid......

I own three hand guns and five rifles and shotguns.I have had a concealed carry permit in the past.I have never carried a concealed hand gun.Guns are not allowed at my home games.I would never go to a game where a gun may be required.

Aren't the shotguns hard to hide in your pants?

That's interesting. I'd think there would be more of a reason to carry when there is $ involved rather than just hanging out.And carrying a gun isn't "showing off" or bragging - for many it is just as natural as carrying a wallet or cell phone.

the NRA thinks the above is a horrible scenario and an unavodiable consequence of serious gun control...... that would make Americans less safe. And, yet, Canada has so much less gun violence than we do. :club::ts
