Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help
in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal
government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and
trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in
Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that
failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen
television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a
'vanilla' Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of
cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again?

Nobody cares about white people suffering, not to mention this particular group of people are not completely helpless. White or black, it goes to show how much one can help themselves if they are so inclined.
So much for a comeback.

Why hasn't the flooding in the midwest received the same outpouring of support that happened in New Orleans?
Because the midwest is peopled by upwardly mobile whites with the collective work ethic of mules and we all know that such people are eminently capable of taking care of themselves without any "help", while New Orleans was populated by a bunch of government-teat sucking Negro dependents who, if left to their own natural devices, wouldn't even know better than to wipe their own asses and would likely be killing each other with spears.

Deep down, people on both sides of the "racial issue" know this- it's just that they react differently, one side with apathy and disdain towards the incompetence, the other side with drastic overcompensation in order to prove some delusional, socially concocted concept of 'tolerance' -

"look how tolerant and "progressive" I am! I'm helping out black people! I love black people... Maybe they'll love me too!" is the schizophrenic internal dialog of a certain "liberal" type. Much like Pavlov and his dog, Negroes elicit an almost involuntary response from certain "liberals".

Just a grammatical note: it's "secession," all soft "s" sounds, derived from "secede," rather than derived from "success," which it wasn't.

And Amscray sounds far more like the "certain type" who longs for the days of the Old South and dreams of secession, not me.

Uh, what's happening CC?
They still call it the White House
But that's a temporary condition, too.
Can you dig it, CC?

And if I don't cop, it ain't mine to have
But I'll be reachin' for ya
'Cause I love ya, CC.
Right on.

There's a lot of chocolate cities, around
We've got Newark, we've got Gary
Somebody told me we got L.A.
And we're working on Atlanta
But you're the capital, CC

Gainin' on ya!
Get down
Gainin' on ya!
Movin' in and on ya
Gainin' on ya!
Can't you feel my breath, heh
Gainin' on ya!
All up around your neck, heh heh

Hey, CC!
They say your jivin' game, it can't be changed
But on the positive side,
You're my piece of the rock
And I love you, CC.
Can you dig it?

Hey, uh, we didn't get our forty acres and a mule
But we did get you, CC, heh, yeah
Gainin' on ya
Movin' in and around ya
God bless CC and its vanilla suburbs

Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya! (heh!)
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
What's happening, blood?
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!
Gainin' on ya!

Yeah!
What's happening, black?
Brother black, blood even
Yeah-ahh, just funnin'

Gettin' down

Ah, blood to blood

You don't need the bullet when you got the ballot
Are you up for the downstroke, CC?
Chocolate city
Are you with me out there?

And when they come to march on ya
Tell 'em to make sure they got their James Brown pass
And don't be surprised if Ali is in the White House
Reverend Ike, Secretary of the Treasure
Richard Pryor, Minister of Education
Stevie Wonder, Secretary of FINE arts
And Miss Aretha Franklin, the First Lady
Are you out there, CC?
A chocolate city is no dream
It's my piece of the rock and I dig you, CC
God bless Chocolate City and its (gainin' on ya!) vanilla suburbs
Can y'all get to that?

Gainin' on ya!
Right on, chocolate city!

That's the sort of thinking that is making the recovery process a lot harder. I was directly affected by the flooding (I'm in Cedar Rapids, IA) and we received roughly five feet of water in the first floor of our house. Everything was ruined. Water heater, washer, dryer, fridge, stove, air conditioning. And I'm sorry, but there's about 5 to 10 percent of this country that could probably replace all of those things out of pocket. I've got a damned decent work ethic (I've never been unemployed and started working when I was 15), but I have no idea how we're going to even begin replacing all of the things that were destroyed by water.

And in terms of how people have been reacting, shock is the overriding reaction. We lived in the "500 year" flood plain, which is one of the worst misnomers ever. Basically, 500 year flood plain means that there's about as good a chance of our area flooding as there is of you hitting your bad beat jackpot at your local casino. Everyone told us that we weren't required to have flood insurance, and the last time the area flooded was in 1929. Nice way to start the Great Depression, huh?

And when something like this happens, the racial issue becomes moot. We all became flood victims at this point. Doesn't matter if you're black, white, brown or whatever.

I don't doubt you for one minute and hope you get help....but you don't really fit the demographic.

I wish you all the best and will donate as things start to be repaired and replaced.

And my point is there's no real demographic in a flood. There are the people that the news focuses on, and then there is what really happened. What the news focuses on is the ne'er do wells that take their FEMA money and squander it. Yes, that's going to happen. But it doesn't account for the large number of people that use their money for exactly what the government intended. If you want to make sure a system is taken out of play, focus on the weakest parts of the system with a spotlight, then cry that none of it works. Someone is going to listen and believe that it's all broken.

And for what it's worth, the FEMA people were great to deal with. They got in and inspected our place within a couple of days, and were very pleased that we hadn't started simply tearing the house apart (which is what a lot of people started doing. Information was initially disseminated stating that they would accept damage photos, but they were much more enthusiastic to see the damage in person.) because a lot of people try to play the system and get money that they aren't supposed to have. FEMA, on the other hand, really does want to make sure people get the funding they need without actually being bent over themselves. Or they at least appeared to when we talked to them.

Disasters, like poker, are just another place where people are going to try and extract maximum value however they can. As poker players, we can all relate to that point. Unfortunately, life demands a few more scruples than a poker table, so the gamers give the whole system a black eye. If there's any real demographic to be concerned with, it's the unscrupulous ******* part of our society. Unfortunately, in situations like this, they come out in full force.
