Tiger Done For The Year

Recommended Posts

That sucks, I was hoping he'd be at Congressional at his tournament this year because I was going to go on one of the weekend days. Oh well.

At least we now know that he wasn't faking his knee injury.

And in more related news, the US loses the Ryder Cup again. :club:
We would have lost anyway. Watch us win now which would make no sense. Does Rocco get his spot? lol

It may help USA actually. Maybe the rest of the team will feel more of a collectivity, and also be able to concentrate on the team's goals more, without the whole Tiger Circus/media frenzy that usually surrounds him. It must be a little distracting for all the other USA players... so now they can relax more and not have to play second fiddle to Tiger, which I assume could have demoralized some of the team in recent years.

Ewing theory FTW????Tiger actually has been a massive Ryder Cup disappointment (reminds me of how Pete Sampras always sucked in Davis Cup) so it is not the end of the world. Maybe the US will figure out how to play well in the teams portion....Europe always builds a giant lead in that part of the competition.

Was this seriously questioned?
It was actually questioned by a few pros. Concensus was that he showed pain only whenever he hit a bad shot. I'm pretty sure it was Retief Goosen (not 100% sure, it was someone like that though) who said it publicly.

I don't think he faked it necessarily but I do think it was a little strange that after he made the tying birdie putt on 18 on Sunday he jumped and danced around no problem. But then he hobbles up and down the fairway.IDK.

You are not understanding knee injuries and the golf swing. His knee was fine to walk or jump.....he probably could have even done some running....but only over short distances. The golf swing is a different animal. It is very very hard on your knees....especially on the follow-through when the knee just completely torques (and tiger woods produces a lot of torque). And with anything that is recently surgically repaired....constant motion (long walks up hilled fairways right after torquing his knee trying to bomb a drive) are much tougher than short burts. Personally, I dont think Tiger should have played at all even though he won. Ignoring doctor's orders is bad policy.

It was pretty obvious anytime he walked down a hill that he was in a good amount of pain. Tiger and his swing coach were really worried about hitting the ball off a downhill lie, but he never had to do that, which is amazing in it's own right. He hadn't hit balls off anything but a flat lie prior to the Open, which is just nuts.

Not to mention adrenaline's ability to mask pain.

another great point. most people dont realize that walking downhill is tougher on your knees than walking uphill. A lot tougher in fact.

I couldn't figure out, why the hell didn't he take the golf cart. I know he likes to walk but wtf, your knee is shot! Unless walking caused 0 pain and the motion is just so totally unrelated it didn't matter. But I somehow doubt that.

Golf carts are not allowed, unless...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PGA_Tour%2C_Inc._v._Martin

What does everyone think about the poll results they have attached to that story?
Of the results (80% for playing Open)? That is what I would figure the general public would vote. Short sighted, but you can't blame people after the performance he put on. It is fresh in people's minds, so they can't imagine a scenario where Tiger not playing (and pulling off that win) is a good thing for the sport. They way I look at it, if playing in that tournament cost him the rest of the season then it was bad for the sport as a whole. You could make the argument that his performance in the Open will draw more fans to the game on it's own then the rest of his tournaments this year, but I don't think that is true. The British, the Ryder Cup, and a few of the other overseas tournaments he plays go a long way to promoting growth of the game in Europe and Asia, and in the long run that is more important then one memorable performance (at least in terms of what is best for the sport).

A few golf tv executives are probably extremely depressed today...Lets face it there are two types of tourneys..Ones with Tiger that draw huge numbersand then the rest that not too many people outside of hardcore golf fans care about..Just the reality IMO

HAHAHAHA. This Ryder Cup will just be about how Tiger Woods is NOT there. I think every pro golfer, even down to the mini tours, owes a shit ton to Tiger for the life they live. However, I think it is absolutely disrespectful the way everything is about him. You watch.....the Ryder Cup folks will constantly be asked about Tiger and what would have been different if he were there. Certainly, the announcers will be talking about it more than I care to hear.
We're talking about Tiger Woods. Not Paul Pierce.
Jealousy is a bitch ain't it?

And the US golfers....fed up with the big story being Tiger's absence....just might get their asses in gear and beat those dirty Euros with their fancy strong currency.Or not. But it would not be that surprising....
