Last night I sat down with a group of players that were playing aweful. 50%plrs/flop, very passive. I wasn't making a dime though. I would get up a few bucks then lose it all the next hand. An hour later I notice the chat start to go up and all I read was Sklansky this, Caro that, Ivey this, poker that. And before I knew it the plrs/flop % was at 22% and the pot size was cut in half!! So I decided to start playing the maniac. I was 3 betting J2o, 55, JTs, any pocket pair for that matter. Big hands I would just call with half the time and re-raise the other half. Some garbage hands I would call with 1/3 of the time, and about an hour later I was up 10BB.I had a blast getting away from traditional poker, but should I have played more straight forward? I was getting plenty of calls while everyone else just picked up the blinds with a raise. Was my strategy correct? or should I not have played SO loose.

The fact that you were up 10BB in an hour would suggest that you playing the maniac was working for ya. Like all the great players say you gotta change gears. You adjusted to the flow of the game and it paid off. When the entire table became tight you correctly changed up and started betting/raising. I applaud you for this, I'm not sure I could bring myself to raise hands that I would normaly muck. Maybe I'll have to try this at the .50/1 tables to see how it plays out. What were the blinds at the table you were playing at?Duff

The fact that you were up 10BB in an hour would suggest that you playing the maniac was working for ya.The fact that you were up 10BB in an hour is completely meaningless. What most likely happens is that you discovered a fundemental thing about poker. Agression is better than passivity. Agressive is better than passive, tight is better than loose. Tight Passive players can grind out small wins.Loose Passive players loose money steadily.Loose Agressive players (what you were doing) either win or loose pretty quickly in a given session.Tight Agressive players win the most money. Most of the time, Loose Agressive is better than Tight Passive.
