Situational question here, results aren't important. Normally I don't like playing big pots preflop with QQ/JJ, but what about against short stacks? I had just joined the table and it was my first hand delt so I have no clue what the villian is like. Basically, do you call 4-bet all-ins for about 40xbb with JJ?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $1.00 BB (5 handed) Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

Hero ($100)
UTG ($56.80)
MP ($37.80)
Button ($39.50)
SB ($46.60)

Preflop: Hero is BB with J, J. MP posts a blind of $1.
1 fold, MP (poster) checks, Button raises to $4, 1 fold, Hero raises to $12, MP folds, Button raises to $39.5, Hero needs $27.50 to call.

About 2:1 on my money here for 40xbb. Is this an insta-call?

You need 34.8% equity in this pot to call.

CODE
Results from http:\\www.HoldEmRanger.com

Pre-flop

Wins Ties Equity
35.98% 0.21% 36.19% ( JJ )
63.60% 0.21% 63.81% ( QQ+, AK )

If you put him on this extremely tight range of QQ+, AK you are slightly +ev to call, and his range is probably wider than that.

I don't think I'm going anywhere v. a short stack here.

Depending on your style, it could be good for your image.

I think your re-raise pre should be more in the $13-$15 range...which makes your decision to call the all-in a bit easier. If you're not going to call his shove, you probably shouldn't re-pop it pre. As played...yeah...s'a call.

Family members also play for fun with this game. We're all new players and we cannot play at 4 tables at once! It's incredible.
