what's up with all these crews? is that the "in" thing now? what happened to just playing poker and posting hands in the strat forum to get input? now all of a sudden people need crews in order to learn and grow in poker?

Inspiration to play more. A core of people to discuss poker with on AIM/IRC etc... It's like going to gym, you'll see better results and be more motivated tomake and reach goals if someone else is there to make you stick to it.

Even during regular FCP 4.40 barrages or challenges, participants are less likely to donk off chips, and simply play better poker.

In the end, better play and better results is what we are all after, right?

you don't need a crew to go to the gym and work out. inspiration goes hand in hand with results. the better you do, the more you want to play. you don't need a crew to discuss things over aim, that's just called having friends. there are no advantages of having a "crew" as opposed to just having friends that you talk and share hands with

It's not done to be "cool," this isn't high school. Cappy is exactly right. Having a specific group of people to discuss hands/stats/strategy/whatever with is much more efficient and effective. This is basically what the Challenge thread is, only on a larger scale (hence the drawback -- if you aren't a well-known poster, you may not get as much/any advice on the hands you post or questions you ask). And all of the very successful people that post in that thread have a core group of other poeple that they actively discuss hands and strategy with via AIM or other similar methods. If that isn't evidence enough of the benefits of a small group, I don't know what is.

There is no question that posting hands in the strat forums will help make you a much better player. Smaller groups are just a more effective way of doing so, imo.

I'm not doing it to be "cool", it's just an entertaining thing to do and a good way to talk with some poeple I've never really talked to before on FCP. It's fun sometimes just to have some people on the rail when you usually don't have any.

That's it and that's all.

wooo-woooooooo.

im still not sold that many of these people that get these big online scores are winners when it comes to the live game, which, by the way, is real poker.
