ajs510 122
As the GM of the FCHL's Lost Cause, I take pride in drafting and acquiring young players and watching them progress through the stages of development into bonafide NHL stars. With that in mind, I decided to start a team tradition last season, where I purchase the jersey of my 1st round draft pick every season (started the collection with the Lost Cause's first ever draft pick, Patrick Kane - #88 - Chicago). My problem is simple: The Lost Cause does not have a 1st round draft pick in this year's FCHL draft. I did, however, happen to shrewdly acquire the services of Andrei Kostitsyn (#46 - Montreal) and Teddy Purcell (#54 - Los Angeles) last season, and both players have been signed to 5-year FCHL contracts with the Lost Cause. Both are expected to be top-line NHL stars of the future, and both would have certainly gone in the 1st round of the FCHL draft this year if available (no chance Kostitsyn would have been available in the draft, but anyway...). Should I purchase one or both of these players jerseys and call them my 1st rounder this year? Or should I take my chances and buy the jersey of my true 1st pick in the draft (not selecting in this year's draft until the mid-second round)? Alternatively, should I reject both options and just purchase my biggest blue chip prospect's jersey (Patrik Berglund - St. Louis) if/once he makes the roster and is assigned a jersey number?Decisions, decisions...I'm kinda leaning towards purchasing both a Kostitsyn and a Purcell jersey and leaving it at that for this year...sadly I have the same problem next season as my 1st round pick in the '09 draft has already been traded away. Fubar The Sperm 1
If financially it doesn't matter, then the more the merrier. If it does, i'd just go with your first pick of this year. It sticks to the tradition better.

ajs510 122
Oh goody, I'm taking crap from the guy with absolutely no youth on his roster to speak of. There are US Congressmen younger than half your squad. Let me know how Jack Skille works out for you as the one and only prospect of the Whalers heading into the 10-11 season. Skille? well..2nd place overall, playoff champ1st place overall, semi-final elimination to eventual champyeah, so far, so good. He's been great! and I'll be drafting better players for $1 in Purcell's first 3 years than anything Purcell himself accomplishes. ok ok, I'll stop being a dick. Both Habs and Kings jerseys are 2 of my favourites. But I'd wait to see who you get in round 1. You might be more inclined to keep a guy you draft instead of a free agent acquisition like Purcell. all three make good choices.how did you get AK again? He was a major offseason target of mine, to be honest I thought I'd be able to get him for less $$$ than I ended up paying for him, but he's definitely worth it. Yeah, I'd obviously rather have Purcell on my farm roster than the main one, but he should challenge for a spot this coming season and hopefully flirt with full potential by the 3rd-4th season of his FCHL contract. I just wish I hadn't signed Handzus for so long, he's utterly fantasy worthless as a King. Hope he gets traded, soon.
WestcoastCanuck 0
More talk about prospects. Oooogly boooogly. The Lost Cause focus on prospects, the Whalers and Ales focus on playoff success.
ajs510 122
Why not trade for a first round pick?Because the GM's in our league value 1st round draft picks somewhere between a WSOP Bracelet and Emma Watson's virginity on the scale of things they'd love to own. I offered up a very affordable Brian Campbell for trade in exchange for a 1st rounder and a defensive prospect, and only got one PM about it. No one is interested in parting with them for anything short of a guaranteed 1st line, 80 point forward making almost no money.

coesillian 0
you're gonna need an AK46, he's going to be lighting up highlight reels for a long time.

ajs510 122
Maybe you would have won if you had less prospects and more real players .Right, I should have somehow been prepared for the fact that I'd lose Daniel Alfredsson, Simon Gagne, Shawn Horcoff, Ray Whitney, Ryane Clowe, Brendan Morrison and Sergei Zubov in the weeks leading up to the playoffs, five of those after the trade deadline was already past. I should have had enough depth to counter losing 4 of my top six forwards and my #1 defenseman before playing a single playoff game. I could have traded every prospect on my roster and not been able to offset that. Just be thankful you drew a wounded opponent in the 1st round, because if you'd been playing either of the other two teams in the 1st round you'd have been bounced in Game 5. Still incredibly WITH a first rounder. In that context, a reminder I value 1st round picks somewhere between a dog collar and Bea Arthur's virginity.
Belanger25 3
Purcell might surprise all of you who have a Montreal Hard On. On the other hand wait with Purcell to see if he gets a real number and not 54. Personally you wont go wrong with either once when Purcell makes the NHL.

serge 904
Answer to the original dilemma..I would buy the LA Kings Jersey, only because the other teams jersey shouldnt even be considered..Unless you are lacking in toilet paper, then I go with the other teams jersey.
