I play 5-20 sng's and finish in the money 1 in 3. I work my b/r up then move to higher sng or higher limit cash games thinking I'm a poker god LOL. Sometimes I hit a streak and cashout but mostly I buy another $50 and play the 5-20 sng's only just to do it all over again. My question here is how much of a bankrole should a sng player have at each level assuming long term play? I hear all the cash game b/r suggestions but not the sng'sThanks for your responses!

I'd say at least a $500 for the $10 SNGs. You are thinking short term, with your $50 for $5 SNG is insane IMO. You leave to room for swings. It is very possible to go cold for 10 games and your $50 is gone on just $5 SNGs.

I would say it really depends on your skill level. About 4 months ago I put $20 on Pacific Poker and started with the $2 and kept going up until I was cashing $100 a week. Pacific has a ton of site problems and poor customer service so I went back to Pokerstars a couple months ago where I deposited $50 and have cashed out over $500 so far and keep a $200 bankroll. the bankroll is mostly to play some limit and multi-table games along with the sng's. I have never gone 10 tourney's without winning. I'm in the money 1/2 to a 1/3 of them.

I'd say you want at least 20x-30x the buy-in. While a good player who consistently beats a $5.00 table will probably be fine with $50.00 to start with, as SLTS correctly pointed out, its still very possible for that good player to hit a dry spell and lose 7, 8, or 9 times in a row, thereby killing the $50.00 bankroll.

Brad44 sounds exactly where I was until a month ago. I too have been wondering what my bankroll should be for SnGs. I also would build up a little roll on SnGs then lose it at ring games or MTT. I have since resolved to stick to my $2 or $5 SnGs throwing in the odd $10 if my bankroll is over $50 and only play $5 MTT freezeouts. My aim now is to stick to these $2 and $5 SnGs until I can build my bankroll up and can beat the upper limit SnGs with the same success rate I am currently having. I am in the money at these $2 - $5 tourneys about 90% and win about 50% of the ones I am in the money. I find as you move up in rates the competition gets a lot tougher, so its better to grow your roll steadily at the lower rates than to try to get the big scores at the higher levels.

In all seriousness I tend to ignore ignorance such as Japeto. You need to realize at SOME point you will go cold. Maybe it wont be soon, maybe it wont be for years, but you asked a SERIOUS question about a safe bankroll, and I gave a SERIOUS answer. You want a bankroll that can survive a small swing, hell you want a BR that will survive a HUGE swing. I said $500 for $10 SNG, I will stand that that is good. With such a bankroll you are allowed to go cold without a feeling of desperation. You want to ALWAYS remain comfortable with your BR, you don't want to ever feel that "this is a MUST win!" You may consider this to much for $10 SNG, this is a GOOD thing. Too much is GOOD. You can handle swings without the "oh shit" feeling. If you keep winning THEN move up. Its isn't like $50 a win is nothing. I'm just trying to help you understand shit happens, shit you can't always control. And the best thing to keep you level headed is to always be able to handle swings and not feel like you are losing control. Good luck.

I enjoyed reading SLT's post about the larger bankroll, and the reasoning. I agree with him 100%. Don't believe I can add anything to that, other than to say at some level, its its individual choice. Personal comfort, tolerance to risk, etx.For me losing my bankroll doesn't mean I'm not meeting obligations. But I still have to look at the fact I put a certain amount of money to start something up....that didn't.Somewhere there's a miscalculation.I also wondered about moving up in tables. It seems as if your fighting an inadaquate bankroll and tougher competition at the same time.
