Often when a player gets called for diving they call the initial trip, hook etc. I was thinking that when a player gets called for diving as punishment for trying to embelish that he should be the only one getting called for a penalty. Anyone agree?

I disagree. The player who committed the original penalty is still deserving in my book. The diver gets hit twice as hard I think, as they negate a power play, plus they get the embarrassment of being called for diving.

I think they should just play on...wipe out both penatlies and play on. 4x4 hockey is fun to watch tho so maybe that's not the best idea.

The thing is, especially before the lockout, refs were so bad at calling hooking penalties that a dive was almost necessary. I despise the idea of diving, but hooking needs to be punished. If I had more trust in refs calling what needs to be called, I would like the idea in the OP.

I agree with Jay. And remember that divers will earn a suspension if they get too many diving penalties. It also earns the player the reputation of being a diver which may decrease the number of drawn penalties in the future.

Derek Roy had one last night agains the Senators. The hook would have given the Sens 2 penalties in the same stoppage (They was a trip earlier in the play). My thoughts were that if Roy wouldn't have dived they wouldn't have called the hook so the Sabres would have only had a 5-4 powerplay anyways.Oh and I hate divers and Derek Roy is one of the worst. He learned from the best though, Daniel Briere.As far as diving penalties I really think they should be called more. It's the only way to get the players to stop doing it. Sometimes you have to call both players if there was an infraction but if the player is embelishing something that wasn't even there I would just call the diving penalty.Diving has no place in the game of hockey.

What if they kept things the same but gave the diver a 10 minute misconduct? That would certainly deter them.

I think diving is usually a stupid call. It doesn't make that much sense when someone is called for hooking and then the guy falls down and is called for diving. If he was actually hooked, then he should have a right to fall down. I think diving should be reserved for when one isn't actually penalized but tries to pretend that they were. I think this makes the most sense.

LLY, I used to agree with that. I used to think it was a complete contradiction to call a dive and a hook on the same play.This year, though, I've changed my view. Since hooking is called so liberally now, it's easy for both penalties to coexist. If someone puts a small hook on a player, it's a penalty. If that player embellishes it, it's a penalty. There's often lots of plays like this now.

On an old Don Cherry tape, he has footage of the worst dive I have ever seen by Slava Kozlov (I think). I can't find it on youtube, but if someone could it would be awesome. No one is within a foot of him.

Serge, I've realized that there's nothing better than rubbing it in your face that the Leafs suck balls.It's everything you deserve. You constantly bash other people, players, teams with no rhyme or reason, and you deserve to have your soul crushed because of how you act on these boards.Don't give it if you can't take it.Bottom line, Pens, Habs, Senators all in the playoffs. it happens every year...How stupid is MLB for scheduling games in the east coast this early in the season..Have to be dome or southern cities hosting..anyways you should have comfort in knowing you are public enemy number 3...behind the habs and sens..
