Yah..I had that up for a day. And before Title IX and Women's Rights advocates destroyed wrestling, it was a VERY big deal, right behind football and basketball, collegiately.

Somebody's got a case of the used to's. My family's all from Iowa, so I know that it's a big deal there, and that Iowa has some sort of super dynasty. I also know that AC Slater was recruited to wrestle at Iowa, so it has to be a big deal.

I would guess that amature wrestling(collegiate/Olympic) outranks Hockey and possibly soccer in terms of interest. 21 National Championships since 1978, btw.AC Slater couldn't have cut it under Dan Gable. It's a good thing he transferred to the University of California-College Years.

yeah, as popular as colligate wrestling may be in Iowa, there's just no chance over all it's more popular than hockey, over all.. some places are just hockey crazy. I know the university of minnesota has an extremely hardcore following, and tickets are very hard to get. And there are no schools ( to my knowledge, at least) that have anywhere close to the following for wrestling that iowa has. Many schools have extreme interest in one or two random sports, that over all aren't that popular. Women's basketball at Tennessee, Women's volleyball at Nebraska (which out draws all other sports other that football and men's b-ball at UNL). I have no idea where wrestling, over all is, but if I were to make a guess off the top of my head it would be behind..Footballmen's b-ballbaseballwomen's b-ballhockeynow, how it compares with say, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's softball... I have no idea. but I would put it somewhere in that range. Of course, at Iowa it's probably number 3.

Low College Hockey Attendance Raises Concerns
Attendance for last weekend’s ECAC Hockey tournament final four and this weekend’s NCAA hockey tournament East Regional wasn’t good. The total attendance for the ECACH tournament was 9,925, including 4,851 for the championship game between Harvard and Princeton.
College Wrestling Finals Attendance
A record 96,994 fans attended the 2000 Championships in St. Louis. The total attendance of 95,459 at Savvis Center in 2005 was the second-highest in the tournament's 75-year history. Based on an economic impact survey conducted at the 2000 event, the Championships attract 15,000 visitors to St. Louis, account for 12,000 hotel room nights and generate an estimated $10 million in economic impact.
I couldn't find this year's totals(I didn't look too hard), but I'm fairly certain they broke another record. As tough as you think the Minnesota Hockey ticket is, they had 12k people for an Iowa/Minnesota duel meet. Just sayin'. I really think you'd be surprised at how many people follow Wrestling with at least a somewhat interested eye.

Ok. So I could've had a sig about UCI's championship last year.back to back baby! note that I have no idea when the championships are or how the team is doing this year. I only knew about it last year because they talked about it on espn when the baseball team made it to the semi-final.

again, I'm not arguing that it's avidly followed in Iowa. I just question how big of following it has outside of a couple schools.

10 years ago, I don't think you'd have any disagreement. But now that big name Gable(and other coaches understudies, obv) disciples are branching out of the Iowa wrestling room and to programs like Oregon State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Cal-State Bakersfield and Edinboro and Central Michigan and those programs achieving some semblance of national prominence that they've never had before(in some cases, in any sport), there's more national interest than ever before. That's a long sentence.

what makes gable so good, anyway? How can the iowa program be that much better than any other one? I always assumed it was just momentum, and they had the best talent, so they kept getting the best talent.

Yeah the Anteaters had a really nice squad led by coach John Speraw last year. Speraw has done an INSANELY greta job at UCI over the last 5-7 years. He basically built one of teh worst teams in the MPSF and made them into a challenger year in and out now. I wonder what will happen if/when Al Scates decides to finally retire at UCLA. I imagine Speraw will flee for his alma matter and then UCLA will start to be unreal again....Now back to the Big D and DDIDM show!!!
