I trhink you played it right until the river, he just got lucky after making a bad flop call.
The river I check/fold though. He most likely isnt calling with any hand that you beat since youve shown strength PF and flop. It does expose you to a chance of being bluffed out, but thats a tough play for villain to make on the river after he flats the turn where he would have had more FE than on the river.

And give him a free card if hes only got one diamond or a pair? Or give him two streets of bluff possibilities?
Hes made a bad flop call with anything but a set of 2s or an A, highly unlikely. You make his flop call much better if you check here. I think you can bet 1/2 pot for value and save some chips and charge him if hes still on a draw though.

This person knows.
By checking the turn (which while quickly going through it, i was tempted to do) you're basically saying "OK, I have an Ace, bluff away". By betting out here, you learn where you are in relation to the opponent. If he calls or raises you're gone.
On the river, again as Copernicus said, just check-fold. Your still saving yourself 1400 chips at a fairly low level of blinds (20-40 IIRC) so their is plenty of play still left in you.
