Day 4: Steam Whistle Brewing Companyfrom canadaSteam Whistle Brewing is a brewery in Toronto, Ontario. The company produces a premium pilsner lager packaged in distinctive green glass bottles and a non-twist cap. They only use four natural ingredients: spring water from Caledon, Ontario, hops from Germany, 2-row barley, and yeast. In 2004, Steam Whistle Pilsner was voted best beer in Toronto at the Golden Tap Awards. Steam Whistle has also been voted Best Toronto Microbrewery by the readers of NOW Magazine, Eye Weekly, and Xpress Magazine in Ottawa. The three founders are former employees of Upper Canada Brewing Company before it was bought by Sleeman's. The original name for the beer was going to be "Three Fired Guys Brewing Company" since they were all fired from Upper Canada Brewing Company when it was purchased by Sleeman; however, they chose Steam Whistle Brewing to evoke an image of steam rushing from a factory's whistle signaling the end of the work day. Embossed at the bottom of Steam Whistle bottles is "3FG" as an inside joke, referencing "Three Fired Guys".Steam Whistle beer is sold in Ontario at The Beer Store and the LCBO. Steam Whistle is also available throughout Alberta at retailers, bars, and restaurants. Steam Whistle is currently in the process of packaging their beer in cans as a means of further penetrating the western Canadian market. The brewery occupies Bays 1-14 within a building known as the John St. Roundhouse. Built in 1929 it was previously the home of a Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive repair facility, and operated as such until May 13, 1988. The John St. Roundhouse is designated a National Historic Site, and is owned by the City of Toronto. It is located within walking distance of the Rogers Centre and the CN Tower (just south of the Tower).chrozzo's ranking: 7/10alcohol content: not surePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Can you buy beer in regular stores there yet? years ago you had to go to special "brewers retail outlets" and get it. Canadian beer is pretty good stuff.

The following information is correct for Ontario, and applies mostly (no guarantees) to other provinces.Beer is ONLY available for home consumption at Beer Stores..a gov't run co-operative, basically, that only sells beer, both domestic and import.. and at LCBO (stores that sell hard liquor/wine and a more limited selection of beer, usually imported).Beer in Ontario, at least, is NOT sold at corner stores or at bars to take home. I believe it's sold at corner stores in Quebec..and in some western provinces it's available at bars to be brought home.In general, Canadian beer is a little stronger than American mass-produced beer, both in alc. content and taste. Many Canadians find mass-produced American beer a little thin and watery.Liquor laws in Ontario are still pretty strict, although the drinking age is 19. There's no free booze at casinos in Ontario and the "Happy Hour" concept of free or discounted drinks is illegal. Bars can't have any kind of sale or discount of alcohol. Usually food is discounted to get around this, half-price aps and such. Restaurants will offer "pitcher and wings" type deals as well.
Into The Fire, chronicling the adventure.

When I went to vancouver 12 years ago I dealt with this. I had to go to a beer store, they closed at 7. I had to go to a liquor store, they closed at 5. So since it was after hours this girl I was hanging out with said we had to go to a bar and buy some 6 packs. And she said that I had to say something like "off shelf" or something like that to get the beer.It was very awkward. I have never bought beer like that before or since.
