I'm starting to look into playing poker for a living and I was wondering if anyone who does so on here could give me some advice on the best route to go for health insurance.I live in new jersey and from what I've heard it's pretty expensive here, especially, I'd imagine, if you're self employed. How much should I expect to pay a month? Is there any kind of poker alliance that offers a group rate?

.ahh then I guess you better flame Adam Junglen he's only at 15 posts...it's a valid q.
I'm very surprised at how many of my peers don't have health insurance. Given my health conditions, it's a necessity for me - regardless, I think everyone (especially poker players, given their income) should have some sort of health care.

Can we get some serious answers for once on this forum? I'm in the same boat in about 6 months, ideas?
Honestly...95% of the questions asked here can be answered if the OP's would simply do about 30 minutes of research online. If the question is that important to you, you could easily research it rather than be lazy and post on a poker forum and hope someone answers it for you.More specifically to this question. It's not like FCP is overflowing with Poker Pro's who actually have to deal with this stuff. So the OP had to, at least some what, be expecting these type of responses. Now we continue to your regularly scheduled flaming.

When I played for a living, I had the privilege of spending $2400 on kidney stones because I didn't have health coverage. Best purchase I ever made...

lol. I was simply asking a question if any poker pros here had dealt with that. I think if I googled poker pros and health insurance not a whole ton would come up.

I wasn't suggesting you googled Poker Pros and Health Insurance, but rather just Health Insurance. Particularly for "Self-Employed." All you have to do is go to a bunch of Health Insurance agencies' websites, compare rates and pick one. GL.

One second.

I'm an insurance agent. Our agency specializes in small groups and individual health insurance, but we sell everything, and are appointed with most carriers.Purchasing insurance through a website like esurance.com is fine until you have a billing or claim issue. It's generally pretty difficult to talk to someone or get escalated problems figured out.I'll try to be brief. I'd be happy to answer questions or go into more depth about anything I discuss. Feel free to ask me here or send me a pm if you'd like to keep things private.Healthy people should seriously consider a high deductible health plan paired with a health savings account. The health plan provides catastrophic coverage while the savings account provides a way to spend pre-tax dollars on health care. These plans are generally 20-45% less expensive as other PPO plans. For those people with ongoing medical issues, expensive maintenance prescriptions, or those who are chronically ill, should look into medicare or other forms of assistance. There are blanket programs that cover people who are 'uninsurable'; in Colorado it's called Cover Colorado. In Colorado, group insurance is called guarantee issue, which means you don't have to show proof of good health to get on the plan. Individual insurance is medically underwritten, and is somewhat cheaper than group insurance. The reason group insurance is more expensive is because it must cover some state mandated benefits, such as mental and nervous disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and maternity. Colorado has reciprocal programs with some states, but after that I couldn't tell you how things work, since insurance is something that's administered by the state.I actually disagree with adam when he suggests an online insurance site. Similar to the bar assoc. for lawyers, insurance producers have a national association called the National Association of Health Underwriters. We pay yearly dues and have lobbyists in the industry to help pass favorable legislation. I would recommend anyone looking for insurance to go through an agent. People can visit www.NAHU.org, and find an agent locally. Be careful about buying anything online, because some companies offer severely limited benefits on some of their plans. Insurance companies usually don't allow contract changes to be made after the point of sale, either. It's hard to say how much someone should be paying. I'm a 25 year old single male, I pay $125 for a regular PPO individual plan, which is about average. I've seen some 35-40 family rates as high as $1,500.At the end of the day, everyone should have insurance. On average, Americans have a major medical claim (over $10,000) once every 7 years. Even spending $75 a month on a catastrophic insurance plan would cover a car accident or some similar peril.
