Invited To Play In A Game With Clebs...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so there is a retired sports figure that plays in a lot of the bigger NL games in LA. I used to play a lot with him 1-2 years ago and then I didn't see him around. The other day I was playing a session and he sat at my table and we instantly kicked it off as we've played a lot together in the past. I asked him where he's been and what he's been up to and he mentions that he's been playing in mostly home games. He lives about 10 mins from my house and invited me to his home game that he has on a weekly basis. He didn't name any names but he says that there are always a few actors and musicians that play in the game. The stakes are a little higher then I'm used to playing but not anything that I can't handle. Obviously, this sounds like a dream case scenario to any poker player but what's the best way to approach this invitation to make sure that I'm invited back time after time?Do you think it would be best to just go there and play my normal game? Is it better to lose the first few sessions and play like an action junkie to increase the likely hood of obtaining a permanent seat in the game? He also invited one of my close friends that he has also played with a lot. Is it bad if we both go to the game together and proceed to clean up? Is it better to soft play the host and not beat him for any huge pots? I prefer to play in a casino because I can come and go as I please and don't need to worry about cashing out and feeling bad for breaking a game or taking peoples monies...A little background... I only know this sports figure through poker. He is not that bad of a player, but certainly will be a looser if my friend and I are sitting in the game. I've never soft played the guy when we've played and I think he truly enjoys the game for the competition. I think he has invited me because he appreciates my ability to play the game and gamesmanship.Any thoughts would be appreciated

Just go and play, dude. You have no idea how well anyone there can play and, except for the fact that there'll be plenty of money floating around, there's no guarantee you're going to win anyway. Lose the "I can beat these morons" ego trip and you'll be fine. Don't talk shit or bitch about losing and relax and you'll probably be invited back. If you win money while hanging out with some dudes that probably have some interesting stories, consider it a bonus.Oh, and if you don't enjoy yourself, don't go back.Have fun.

I hear ya.I am always respectful while playing and never under estimate the ability of any player. I know how to handle myself at a poker table and never talk sh*t after losing. I know the level I'm at with my ability to play the game and I have a pretty good idea where these celebrities will be at.As for there not being a guarantee of me winning, I obviously know this. But, I have been a consistent winner for the past few years in the some of the bigger NL games in LA and I'm confident enough to play in any game as long as I can afford it.

So what's the problem? I say go for it. Go, play your game, and just be yourself, unless you're a complete tool (then be somebody else). If they like you, you'll be invited back, if not, you said so yourself you don't see the guy very often.

Slowroll everyone and bitch about the beer selection. Let them know you're a big shot, too. Thats how you fit in around celebs.
Also act like you are bored and wish there were some real Hollywood players at the game. Try to always looked disinterested and answer each question with a fake smile and a short yes or no.And take alot of phone calls and say things like: "Hi Jack, no I can't go to the Laker's game tonight" and "Hey Toby, number4? Yea..I don't think so but good luck."You'll get invited back for sure.

Well, again I don't know the names of the celebrities that play and I'd rather not relinquish the name of the host. If I go and it's appropriate to name names then I will. I'm pretty sure that there will only be a few "B" listers though. I'd be very surprised if there are any "A" listers in this game.I'll also submit a trip report."Cleb" is what you get when posting at 6:30am after playing a 16 hour session then coming home and playing COD4 for another 4 hours...

Do you think it's a problem if my good friend and I are sitting in the game at the same time? My friend and I are probably as close as Esfandiari & Laak. We never soft play each other but we have a pretty good feel for each others plays and we are able to avoid being trapped by each other. I don't want it to seem like we're going in there and ganging up on these guys...
