Floor (mgm Grand Detroit) Gets One Wrong

First of all, I freely admit that I could have handled myself better in this situation.Last night playing at MGM Grand Detroit for the first time I was AMAZED at how poorly run the tables were. Most dealers were poorly trained or prepared to take charge of a table. Several seemed more interested in chatting with players and each other than actually dealing Poker.As the night wore on, our table became more and more unruly. The clientele were mostly drunk, so of course I was trying to focus on the positive aspects of their condition, but this became increasingly more difficult. I would estimate that fewer than 10% of hands played had a full table. People were taking breaks all over the place. Two women came and played for about 25 minutes and then decided to take a "lunch" break. The Floor "Cake Boxed" their chips and we played 8 handed (or fewer) for the next hour. When they returned , they just picked up their chips and left.At one point over about an hour and a half we played maybe 25 hands. Every action on every street of every hand had some sort of "Issue"Players acting out of turn, getting up and talking to other tables, crowds of friends coming over to chat and distract players, watching the football game on TV, text messaging or chatting on cell phones, exposing cards, misdeals, forgetting that the action was on them, asking for a recap of previous action ("Who raised? Who? The guy in the blue Cap? That Guy? How much? Twenty? So, it's Twenty to me? Why'd you have to raise? Really, I wanted to play this hand. So, Twenty to me? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Twenty. <count> <stack> <count> Twenty? Ok, I call. Oh sorry, here's five more."). Dealers were telling stories. Two women who were friends sat down and proceeded to even further disrupt the game. A guy sitting across form me was more interested in chatting with the women - which is fine, but it was more like he was one of the "girls" instead of hitting on them ("Oh you know Sandy? I used to date her! Tell her Jimmy B. Said Hello? Oh, m'gawd.... Blah blah blah") The girls were "princess" types who thought it was cute to ignore the rules and act like the dealer was "Soooo Rude!!!" for actually trying to enforce any of the rules. They EACH were warned multiple times for EACH of the following: talking on their cell phones, talking to their entourage, acting out of turn, asking for advice from each other and other players, showing cards, Phones on the table, cash not in play on the table, forgetting it was their action...I was going CRAZY.There was one Dealer who was a pretty good table general and was actually beginning to take some control. At one point I tipped him for his actions telling him I appreciated his efforts. Finally, the Chatty Guy was talking with the women and went to call the Big Blind ($2) without paying attention to his chips. He didn't have any White chips and tossed two Red chips into the pot - without declaring his intention. The Table General Dealer moved on to the next player and said: "Ten to Call" Chatty player said: "No, I just meant to call, not raise!" Dealer: "I'm sorry sir, the chips stay in the pot. It is a raise."A discussion ensued, and the player called the Floor. Floor said: "Doesn't seem like any of the other players in the hand mind. It'll be a $2 call. Give him $8 change."The Dealer was pissed. I told him I thought the Floor got it wrong and he just shook his head letting me know he was disgusted, but not wanting to make a point of it and further disrupt the game.After the hand, one of the women said in a SUPER snotty manner to the Dealer: "Ha! How's that make you feel that he didn't decide in your favor. Makes you look pretty Stupid."I decided I'd had plenty. "That'll be enough of the Crap. You've been disrupting this Effing Table, and the floor may not support them, but I'll be Damned if I'm going to sit here and listen to you insult a dealer who's just doing his Effing job. Your antics are getting old and it is time for them to end."Her friend said: "Hey, we're just having fun. We can do whatever we want. This is just fun."I said: "Fun is fine, but there's money on the table and that means some rules apply."Yeah, I know, "don't tap the glass" but enough was enough. Yes, it needs to be fun, but there are limits and if you're getting less than an Orbit every half hour. That isn't much fun for me.Where do you draw the line between having a good time playing Poker, and a drunken house party at the Casino?

honestly sir, you're better than i am.....i would've lost it far sooner, probably at the floor when they dropped the ball. Seriously, i would've probably been calling the floor over every few minutes b/c of the shit going on. You should've jsut come to windsor

That sucks. I obviosly don't want everyone to take the game as seriously as most of us here do, but tables like that ruin the game for me. I'll often leave, even though i feel like I'm missing out on a profitable situation, but if I'm cranky I'm probably not playing my best anyway.I play live so infrequently, though, that I'm occasionally inclined to start goofing around and nutbarring that type of table. It's nice now and then to blow off some steam, and there's nothing better than the drunks thinking you're the crazy drunk one at the table. Btw, I think you were well within bounds for saying something, but I hope you left afterwards, since it doesn't sound like you were having fun or in the frame of mind to play optimally.

It only worked if he responded with "I do not appreciate your brand of humor madame" and was wearing a monocle at the time.The thing that concerns me most about the whole story is that the floor manager didn't seem to care at all about the rules. It wasn't a big deal this time, but it could affect you in a much bigger way later.

I've had experiences NOT AS BAD as this at CW... but man, that's pretty bad. I'd definitely get a word in to the morons at the table and the floor. It sucks for you at that point because it seems from your story that you were the only one really interested in playing poker, in a god damned poker room.I would have requested a table change first... then just leave if they don't take care of the problem or give you a table change.

i've seen problems like this at CW too, but i merely say something to the floor and it's taken care of. I've always seen CW floor staff stick to the rules tho so the whole did he bet or call thing would probably never be an issue. Trouble with CW lately, is that all of the good dealers get taken out of the pokerroom to be put at the table games downstairs because they are such good dealers. Friday night, we dealt with a dealer who autochecked the table. Unless you had chips out and on the table to raise with, she assumed you checked. Probably cost me a couple of pots. I'm usually the drunk and disorderly chick at the table having all the fun. Truth is for me tho, it's an act and i never cross the boundaries.

The table did settle a bit (after Loud Mouth Girl #1 quit complaining about me shutting her down) Even Chatty Guy admitted that the Dealer wasn't out of line and just doing his job.

You're right of course. And I understand the "fun" aspect and completely agree that my definition of "fun" isn't going to be universal. Really, I tried to concentrate on just taking their mobneys, and had a decent night, but it just got overwhelming.I actually played OK. Bottom line: I'm not always going to be able to control my environment and it will often be sub-optimal and distracting/frustrating. If I want to continue to be a "winning player" I need to be sure I can tolerate a wide variety of situations - however if I am going to "enjoy" my limited Poker time, I'll also have to decide wisely in which Room I play.

Me too.And no, you weren't out of line. The dealer got shat on and then spat on. I think it's commendable that you stood up for something that wasn't right. That lady was completely out of line when goading the dealer and she needed to have that pointed out. You seemed to do it in a straight forward way that wasn't rude to her, which makes it appropraite.From the dealer's perspective, he knows he can't say anything to the customer which makes it pretty frustrating, even though he would have been warranted.

I'm glad you stood up for the dealer. He's in a awkward situation where he has to take verbal abuse on a daily basis from jerks and not be able to say or do anything.
