3/6 online. You just sat down, dont have much of a clue on the play of the table yet. But you know from past experience on the site its a pretty tight good game, as far as quality. You are in SB and see A
J
Everyone folds to you. You raise, BB calls.Flop A
A
T
Now here is where I ask if I should have done something differently.I checked the flop. BB comes out betting immediatly, I like this and figure he is going to bet again on the turn so I call.Turn - 5
I check, he bets out immediatly again and figure this is my chance to raise right here. I raise he calls. I had thought about this person possibly having AT, or another A, but would have bet the flop with an Ace? Maybe if he thought I would think it represented something else. Hmmm...maybe this guy is better than I think, or not as good as I think and does have the A with better kicker. Nah... I believe I need to get paid here, this is good opportunity to make some money. River - 4
Now I look at the board and think... well there is the wheel looking at me. But he called a SB raise, shouldnt be the wheel. He still could have AT or has my jack outkicked, but really thinking something different.I come out betting he raises immediatly.I call of course.I show AJs, he shows 23o.... called the raise, had no part of it, called a check raise on the turn, hit the inside straight on the river. So what has been racking my brain all night is this. Do I come out betting this flop? I think its one of the times you really need to get paid on this hand, and to do that is to let them get something of the board. Now of course we all know for him to call it in the first place pretty weak, then to chase with nothing and hit runner runner for inside straight is not very high percentage in the long run.If I come out betting Im sure I take it down right there. 6 dollars, but I still think this may be a time when you need to capitalize on the good hands, draw outs happen not to worried about that.My emotions say I played it correctly, my brain says "ya dummy, you bet the flop you take his 6 bucks" Instead I lost 33

Your brain is right, you gotta bet the flop and take down the small pot. It's just like when ya got pocket A's. You either win a little pot early or lose a big one on the river.

I haven't yet played above $.50/$1, so take the following advice with a grain of salt.My advice: don't be "opposite man". You would bet this flop if you raised preflop without an ace, you gotta bet it with the ace. (If you know the other guy's a maniac and will bet your hand for you, okay, check, but you didn't know that.)The only argument I can come up with for just calling the river: If the guy is a good player, and he doesn't know you well (so he can't attempt unconventional plays to exploit your tendencies), then his only possible holdings for raising the river are A4 and 44, which beat you, or a bluff, with which he won't call a 3-bet. You don't know he's a good player though (it turns out that he's quite the opposite), so you must reraise that river.
Then you go to da box for 2 minutes by yourself, you feel shame... then you get free.

This is getting checked through way too much. Especially with the raise preflop then the check on the double ace flop.Fast playing is the new slowplaying.

You need to bet the flop heads up out of position, you are usually getting checked behind. Get what you can out of this hand.By the way, there is not one good argument on this earth for not 3-betting the river.
