Even after my 2nd reading of SSHE, I still don't understand how to calculate reverse implied odds (RIO). With pot odds (PO) or implied pot odds (IPO), I know how to compute or estimate what the effect is on the value of my hand. While I understand RIO, I don't know how to compute it. I may just need a clearer definition of RIO, so anyone please answer me these:1. From the SSHE example:You are the BB.Hand: 9
2
Board: 9
8
3
Preflop: Two players limp, the SB completes, and in the BB you check.Flop: pot = 4 SB; the small blind bets into the field SSHE says fold because of RIO. But how do we estimate RIO to make our decision? There are 9 clubs, 18 non-clubs that complete straight draws (the Q's, J's, T's, 7's, 6's, and 5's) and 6 other overcards (A's and K's) that can improve the draws over us. That's 33 cards out of 47 unseen with varying probability of completing our opponenet's hands. We only have 5 cards to improve. Also, we don't know how many bets, on any streets, we are going to face. We could estimate that we'll face 1.5 small bets flop (50% of the time raised, 50% just called) and 1 big bet on each of the turn and river assuming a relatively passive table and the SB or flop raiser continuing to bet out. That gives us 2.75 more big bets to call to the river against a current 2 big bet pot where somewhere up to 33 out of 47 cards could cause us to lose. Worse yet, we may be behind to a better 9. And we have the two limpers yet to act every street. So, how bad are the estimated odds we are getting according to RIO?2. You are in the BB:Hand: T
8
Board: T
9
5
Preflop: Two players limp, the SB completes, and in the BB you check.Flop: pot = 4 SB; the small blind bets into the fieldHere, we have top pair plus medium kicker, and the only easy draws are overcards and straight draws. That's 23 straight completing cards (K's, Q's, J's, 8's, 7's, and 6's, but we have an 8 ) and 4 A's as overcards, while we have only 2 cards to definitely improve. We could still be behind to a better T. Again, if needed, assume an average of 2.75 BB to call down to the river. How bad are our estimated odds according to RIO?3. You are in the BB:Hand: Q
3
Board: Q
7
2
Preflop: Two players limp, the SB completes, and in the BB you check.Flop: pot = 4 SB; the small blind bets into the fieldTop pair again, this time with no flush or straight draw. Only 8 overcards possible, but we lose to any other Q except Q3. Assume still 2.75 BB on average to call to the river. How bad are our estimated odds according to RIO?=========================================I guess what I'm really trying to get at is the mathematical turning point when using RIO to decide between folding and calling. With PO, if my hand is 4:1 to win, and the pot is laying me 5:1, I call, while at 3:1 I fold. At exactly 4:1 PO, calling and folding are equivalent decisions. With IPO, I can adjust the PO if I estimate that I will win extra bets later if I hit but lose no more if I miss. How do I make these estimates with RIO?Thanks, :-) 5cardstud

i'm not so sure that reverse implied odds are mathematical quantities, unlike implied pot odds. i think RIOs are just estimates and abstractions.in hand 1, there are a lot of cards that can/will fall on fourth and fifth street that allow others to draw out on you, even if you're ahead. if you play until showdown, you'll be paying off the better hands on fourth and/or fifth street more often than they'll pay you off (what exactly would they be calling with that's worse than a pair of 9's with 2 kicker? a draw, maybe, but as we said, a lot of cards come off that complete potential draws).that's just the idea--even if you have the best hand right now, you'll be paying off better hands by showdown more often than they'll be paying you off.so, in marginal situations, think about reverse implied odds.sorry this doesn't really answer your post, but i'm not sure there really is an answer. i've never seen RIOs quantified.aseem
