the whole "making public" of the dudes crack addiction was way to glitzy and glam-rock for me.pitchforkmedia.com said this in their review of the most recent album in comparison to their debut... "All that's clear is that, once again, in the fishbowl of celebrity, addiction is being spun into a PR coup, a thing to be pitied, laughed at, cried at, forgiven, and ultimately used as just another excuse-- mostly for why this isn't a better album. "

I was disappointed with the second album too, but not for these reasons. The NME gave it a fantastic review, and I was excited, only to feel let down when I finally heard it. The raw energy and passion had gone, replaced with what appeared to be soppy ballads and some dreadful guitar palying. However, I don't think you can blame the band or Pete Doherty for turning his addiction into a PR stunt - so much of this is out of their control. And that first album is a masterpiece, in my opinion.CCR
