Just got the worst bad beat of my life at a home game, not major money, but a reasonable ammount to me....i bought in for £15 (cash game) got up to about £25, then get dealt....8c 8h on the buttonJust call the big blind, figuring that any overcard on the board could skrew me over, only the big blind stays in the hand. heads up. flop comes down 8s 4d 2sso im jazzing, have the nuts on the flop. it gets checked to me, i raise about £4 so not to force them out. i get called. at this point i put them on a flush draw. turn comes down: 4sIm now jazzing even more, top full house, eights over fours, to me it was just a case of extracting maximum value possible. it gets checked to me again, at this point im thinking that they are just trying to trap me having hit their flush. i bet out another £4, get called...river comes down 7dthis time, they bet out, about £6, im thinking, yes, just as i thought, they have the flush. I reraise all in, and get immediatley called.i smuggly turn over my cards "eights full" and was just ready to scrape the pot towards me when they turn over theirs. pocket farking fours. four of a kind.my question is, could i have possibly have laid this down? i mean, it got to the stage where i thought i was totally unbeatable and diddnt even bother looking for tells (my tells on that player are only limited to strong and weak anyway) and just got overly carried away. worst.

This isn't a bad beat. If you had pocket 4's would you not be loving that flop too? He should've raised the flop to protect from the flush draw, but other than that there was no reason for him to fold. Both of you played this reasonably right, no bad beat and no, not really anything you could do about it. That's just poker, it happens.

ok maybe a "bad beat" was the wrong term. more of getting skrewed over by dumb probabilities on the turn and getting beaten by the better hand. but still, a bad beat in its own right. 95% in my favor on the flop.

Yeah, never open-limp with 88 like that - you were asking for it.I was at this game - and would just like to add that it was made 15x more funny by wrigh exclaiming out loud that the card which filled his boat and gave the other player quads was "what a cash card!".Haha, was a great pot. Also, the 3rd :D (not :) ) came out on the end.The quads were played beutifully :-) .Better luck next time Ad.

Yeah you were way ahead on the turn, but there was no reason for him to fold at all. It'd be like AA vs. KK pre-flop, and a K falling. Sure it would suck because AA was so far ahead, but you can't blame KK for being there. Not a bad beat in any right. And honestly, the quads weren't played beautifully either. Trips on the flop but he should've reraised to protect against the flush draw. Smooth calling the flop was bad, even if it was heads up. And dude, I'm not saying it doesn't really suck what happened, it does. There was no way you could've avoided that, and I don't think there's a person on this forum who would lay that down at any point. And if there is I would like to invite them to my house on Thursday nights...
