I hear all these statements about how A-rag should not be played... I was just wondering, what is considered "rag" in this? Thanks.

Generally, anything 9 or below is considered a rag.

My own cut off is A 10, and even that I will get away from quick if necessary (might play less than 10 kicker if it's suited and I have position). Ever had a sooted AA?

a rag is a card that comes that is more than likely not of consequence
