serge 904
This is really strange...They are suspending him and putting him in "stage two" of the NHL's substance abuse program. From what I can understand its because he decided to put in a plea agreement...It has nothing to do with any new incident and for all we know he is clean and sober since his arrest...This doesnt seem fair if the Leafs dont get to use him this year...http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=217553&hubname=
digitalmonkey 929
The Leafs were well aware of the situation before they acquired him in the trade.P.S. I doubt he'll miss any regular season games due to the suspension.
nell789 0
He has claimed to have been sober since the first incident. If that holds true, then I doubt he will miss any action. And what's not fair about it? The fact that every player in the league is governed by the same substance abuse policy? Or that it just so happens to be a Leafs' player who violated it.

I wasn't aware of this, perhaps someone stole my password.Perhaps I should now make a thread where I cry about people personally attacking me and that I am going to leave the forum forever. You called me a moron serge...twice. That hurts me. Only thing is, I don't know how to make threads like that because I try not to take posts on an internet forum very seriously, and generally try not to act like a child. On the Bell thing, the NHL presumed innocence until he pled guilty. It is common for leagues (Other than the NFL) to wait to see what justice is handed out by the courts before making their own decisions. While he is unlikely to miss any significant amount of time, it would not be surprising to see Bell suspended for 3-5 games. On the other hand, his sobriety, if provable, may be enough. Either way, I wouldn't call it either unexpected or unfair.....

serge 904
Let the crying begin!I was actually expecting a lot less suspension..maybe 3-5 games...Considering the incident took place over a year ago...in the grand scheme of things its not THAT long and he will be able to help the leafs in a big way this year.. Derswick 0
Well I will give it too you that the NHL took way too long to suspend him. But I guess we have to go with that inocent until proven guilty thing.

But I guess we have to go with that inocent until proven guilty thing. This may be a sore spot for Ottawa Senators fans however....Dany Heatley goes and drives like a madman and kills his friend and he is not suspended...The only reason he doesnt do jailtime is because its ruled an accident and no alcohol is involved...I think excessive speeding is just as bad as drunk driving as you are at least aware of what you are doing...Heatley should of been suspended a lot longer than BELL...By no means am i saying what Bell did was right...Drunk driving has no place in society and he should be punished...And he pleaded guilty ,owned up to it and he will serve jail time....Bettman has no right to suspend him for a non hockey incident where the player has been already been punished, especially when the incident happened over a year ago. runthemover 40
It wasn't just drunk driving it was also a hit and run. The NHL did right by waiting for the court's decision first.Do you also think that Michael Vick shouldn't be suspended by the NFL? It's also a nonfootball incident. I don't see how the time between the actual incident and the suspension being decided upon makes a difference. You have to wait for the courts. For Bell, if the plea agreement had happened last year then he would have been suspended last year.

doox 15
I was just reading Bob Mckenzie's blog on this topic and saw this part:"There will be some Leaf fans who think Bell's suspension is too severe, that the incident occurred a year ago, he has turned his life around since then and having to go to jail once the NHL season is over is more than enough punishment. But that spectre of one of its players having a jail sentence hanging over his head is precisely why the NHL had no choice but to suspend him. There will be others who believe 15 games is light, a mere tap on the wrist, but the fact Bell has been a model citizen and is living clean and sober was a huge factor in the NHL's decision-making process. If it had been 20 or 30 or 40 games, it wouldn't have been a huge surprise."After reading that, I knew exactly which Leas fan he was talking about, so I ran over here to see: Breaking news ...I find this totally unfair..Suspended for 15 games...http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=218124&hubname= Thanks for not disappointing, Serge. You brought up the bolded subject. They both broke the law. They both happened outside of the game. Shortly after Vick is sentenced, Goodell will suspend him. Same thing happened with Bettman here. Whether they lied or what they did has no bearing on it. They both broke the law and both will serve jail time. This means they should get an ingame suspension as well.
