I know it's just in response to comments too far in the other direction, but I think you're underestimating how much a hopeless season will affect a team mentally. Fact of life: If you think you can't win, you won't play as hard. No, the players aren't going into games saying "I think I'll only try about 80%", but if you've ever played a sport you know that there is a mental component to performance.
yes there certainly is. but i take issue with people saying these guys have nothing to play for. they are fighting tooth and nail for their very jobs. they don't perform well and its hit the bricks shitbird. couple that with these are the very best, most competitive athletes in the world and i think people vastly overestimate how much of a role "effort" or "mental focus" plays in winning - as in they're all busting their picks and are as focused as they can be.

They have one big thing to play for and that is the embarrassment of being on a zero win team!

Watched our new quarterback beat ND last night. Will this be the day for the win?

Where's loogie this season?

My (non-co-ed, thankyouverymuch) softball team is too drunk to be conscious of whether or not we're in the playoff hunt. But it does even work in baseball. I'm sure you know more than I do about the stats regarding players' batting averages going down when on losing teams, and a hitter's average, of all things in sports, should remain constant if emotional baggage from being on a losing team doesn't come into play.

perhaps the team is losing because the players average went down.

It accounts for that. It also looks at players being traded from winning to losing teams, and vice versa.

what a decision coming soon. Give Manning $28 mill option or let him go, exciting times for a winless team.Hell at this point in the season I would rather be a fan of the Colts than 28 other teams.

Personally, I move on to Luck. Manning only has a few more great years left, even with him you're not a championship team in the foreseeable future, plus you have to worry about his neck. Better to grab a young franchise QB when you can, pay him much less, and give him time to develop. Of all teams, the Colts should understand that.

You could always have Luck be mentored by Manning for those few more great years and then pass the torch. It's not my $28m.
