Why would a team part with anything for Jason Kendall.

Scheduled to make more than$13.4 million this season -- the Pirates are reportedly paying $5 million of it -- in the final year of his contract, Kendall was batting .226 with two homers, 26 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .261 through Sunday.
I find it unbelievable that at any point he snookered someone into giving him a contract that would pay him 13.4 million at one point. Wow. I dont really see why the Cubs would want this guy, but oh well.

This has to do with a thing that Jim Hendry has for Kendall. Hendry tried trading for Kendall a few years back, but when that fell through they went after Michael Barrett instead. Also Lou Pinella is well known for wanting veteran leadership out of his catchers, and I'm sure that the decision for Kendall had Pinella's input. While Kendall doesn't bring great defensive skills or power, he will provide leadership and game calling ability behind the plate that the Cubs have been lacking for some time. That being said I would never make this trade if I were the Cubs GM. There are better catchers out there.

The Pirates still pay a little over $5 mil of it.
Edit: "The Chicago Cubs' acquisition of catcher Jason Kendall from the Oakland Athletics has no bearing on the amount of money the Pirates will pay the Athletics this season, which is $5.5 million."

Well, he sucks *** now, but was once a really good player. Before he hurt his thumb he was a 320/.420/.500 catcher who could steal 25 bases too. Pretty sick.

Kendall was pretty awesome before this happend on July 4th, 1999. After 80 games in the season the buccos were actually at .500. Pretty sad but that's about as good as it had been for Pirates fans since I was 9 (1992)
