I had been playing at the the table for an hour or so, however villian was relatively new, and i had no read on him. Should i have raised preflop? can i assume villian has KK or AA?

I would say reraise to 12. He could be raising 99+ AQ+ here and maybe even AJ if he's that loose.

It's really hard to put him on a hand here, he could have AJ or maybe AK of diamonds, and of course he could have overs(or JJ) but its really hard to know when you dont reraise him preflop.

It is situations like this why I reraise preflop with QQ. I hate having a board of unders and not knowing where I am at. I think the villain played this hand like he had JJJ but he could easily have AA or KK.

pf is a definite re-raise, even completely void of knowledge of villain Q-Q rates to be good here more often than not

i like shoving the turn rather than making a small bet like that, he barely has more than the pot size so there's no real need to make small bets because if he shoves over the top then you're stuck calling anyways

what did he have?

He showed KK and took the pot. In hindsight, a raise PF would have been reraised, however i probably could have folded at that point...

exactly, and in fact another good reason to put the re-raise in pf...you don't know where you are by just calling, by re-raising and getting shoved in on, you can now fold

Yeah, the problem is that you never got to define the villain's hand well enough. By the time you sensed you were beat you were obviously committed. Preflop is the best and cheapest time to define your hand in this situation.
