And Then There Were Seven: Ac Trump Taj Mahal To Close In November

Recommended Posts

I wonder how many Atlantic City Casinos will manage to stay open.

I have fond memories of the Taj poker room as it was the first large poker room I even visited and I took 6 or 7 weekend trips there in 1998. Before Borgata was built it was the place to play poker on the East Coast and was where the casino scenes from Rounders were shot.

The poker room at the Taj sure has a lot of history. But in the latter years both the hotel and the poker room really became a dump. Crowded, dirty, unkempt and horrible service. Unfortunately it is a reflection of the entire Boardwalk. Atlantic City is a dump. The few times I go there now, I park my car at the Borgata and don't leave the place until it's time to go home.

The Taj was the first large poker room I ever played at as well. But I will not miss it at all.

We're nearing the 30 year mark of the gaming boom. CA v Cabazon was over 30 years back. Historically, 20 years is about how long it takes for a radically disruptive X factor to overcome inertia of the status quo.

They started importing Japanese cars in the 70's, American automakers laughed, "THEM JAPS MAKE JUNK!" as they continued to crank out 10,000-Miles-To-Your-First-Major-Failure Ford Tempos and Chevy Citations.

The internet hit critical mass around 1995, but not really until the mid 2000's. Old media knew they had something to worry about but had their Pollyanna talking points about why all was well. Here we are 20 years later, digital has completely blown print by (and its only getting worse). Stalwart print brands have fallen like flies.

Vegas was Vegas because it was a place in the desert where you could go do to stuff you couldn't legally do anywhere else; gamble. AC grabbed their share of the lightning but once Indian Casinos entered the fray and really got rolling in the late 80s, it was only a matter of time. Vegas realized this and re branded itself into Adult Disneyland, AC didn't get the memo and continued to offer the same mediocre gaming experience that could he had at the local Indian casino. The scarier thing is what does a Post Gaming AC look like 20, 30, 50 years from now. Mad Max.

Great post but I had to highlight this. My parents had a Tempo when I was a kid and my grandma had a citation and christ almighty they were horrible, horrible cars that constantly needed to be fixed. In retrospect, maybe naming your car after the term for a court summons wasn't the best marketing strategy. This was right before they started to scrap actual words all together and started making cars that sort of sounded latiny, like Integra and Sentra

American cars in the 80s were at their absolute nadir. They couldn't get any worse.

The US autos had become every-man-for-himself looter enterprises where all parties, from the management to the labor, didn't give one **** about the company or the product, they were just out to get everything they could in management wages and union concessions. It was a miracle they even lasted to the great reckoning of 2008. By all rights, they should've died completely off in the 90's but their full size truck offerings were still strong and kept a pulse in the corpse.

These days, cars are 200K out of the gate. You can buy late 90's/early 00's Japanese cars with 120K miles on them for $1500 or $2000 that will run you for another 10 low cost years. I've been driving the same crappy car for the past 6 years, instead choosing to make that payment against the mortgage on a vacation home that is currently rented and will be paid off early in another 5 years. There's an economic-empowerment imbalance right now in the car market for people who have their ego under control.

The Revel was just sold at auction for a ridiculously low price: http://nypost.com/2014/10/01/winner-of-revel-auction-plans-to-re-open-bankrupt-ac-casino/

When I was planning a weekend to AC after the Revel first opened I checked out their website to decide whether to stay there or the Borgata. When I saw the prices of the rooms and the cost of the meals at the restaurants I was stunned; they were outrageous. I knew then that they were doomed to go bust. I hope the new owners don't make the same mistake.

Well the new owners are Canadian so they're probably a lot smarter than the last ones.

There is a link in that article to another article about a racist developer who is also interested in the property.
