Welcome to the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star

One of the most star-studded World Poker Tour events of the season is about kick off at the Bay 101 Casino in San Jose, California. The Bay 101 Shooting Star welcomes poker players back to the San Francisco Bay Area for the 12th year in a row and each starting day flight will feature up to 25 shooting stars that are familiar faces in the poker world that have $2,500 bounties to claim when they are busted out of the tournament.

Other interesting twists here at Bay 101 include a $10,000 prize for the chip leader on Day 1A and Day 1B, six-handed tables during the late stages of the tournament (final 36 players down). The shooting stars help to attract enough railbirds in this poker-crazed region to make it the most fan-friendly event of the season.

Players will begin with 30,000 in chips and blinds begin at 50-100 for the first 60-minute level on Day 1A. There will be 15-minute breaks every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 6. The field will play 10 levels on each Day 1 and play should end around 11 p.m. PT. A winner will be crowned on Friday, March 14 at the end of the WPT telelvised final table. Here is a look at the full schedule for the tournament.

Day 1A: Monday, March 10

Day 1B: Tuesday, March 11

Day 2: Wednesday, March 12 (play down to final 18)

Day 3: Thursday, March 13 (play down to final table of six)

Final Table: Friday, March 14

Day 1A: 29 Shooting Stars

Level 2: 75-150, ante

There are 29 Shooting Stars in today's field, with at least one at each table. Anyone who busts a Shooting Star will receive a $2,500 bounty and an autographed custom t-shirt with that specific Shooting Star on it.

If a Shooting Star wins the tournament, they will collect their own bounty and their own t-shirt. But since this tournament has been a part of the World Poker Tour, no Shooting Star has ever won it.

Here are today's 29 Shooting Stars (in alphabetical order), who will pose for a group photo in the lobby during the first break (around 1:00 pm):

Todd Brunson, David Chiu, Jonathan Duhamel, Tony Dunst, Antonio Esfandiari, Jay Farber, Joseph Hachem, Loni Harwood, Phil Hellmuth, Blair Hinkle, Faraz Jaka, John Juanda, Kyle Julius, Eugene Katchalov, Jason Koon, Phil Laak, Nam Le, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu, Dominik Nitsche, Brian Rast, Marvin Rettenmaier, Matthew Salsberg, Noah Schwartz, Erik Seidel, Mike Sexton, Jennifer Tilly, J.C. Tran, Paul Volpe.

Negreanu Fades

Level 3: 75-150, 25 ante

With the board reading 9heart.gif8diamond.gif7diamond.gif, the player under the gun bets 1,200. Shooting Star Daniel Negreanu calls from UTG+1, the player in middile position calls, and the turn brings the 6club.gif. The UTG player checks this time and Negreanu bets 2,650. The player in middle position raises to 8,000, UTG folds, and Negreanu takes a few moments before he reraises all in for about 19,000.

The player in middle position calls with Adiamond.gifTdiamond.gif, freerolling with a flush draw against Negreanu's Qheart.gifTheart.gif. The river is the 2spade.gif, safe for Negreanu to survive.

Daniel Negreanu - 23,000 (153 bb)

Level 10: 500-1,000, 100 ante

With the board reading Qspade.gif7spade.gif5spade.gifJdiamond.gif, Daniel Negreanu gets his stack into the middle with Jspade.gifJheart.gif against the Qheart.gifQdiamond.gif of David Forster. The 9heart.gif river is no help to Negreanu, locking up the bounty for Forster.

Good luck to all and you have my respect. But this picture makes me think of two words:

"Band Camp."

I decided to head up about an hour ago which was the worst decision ever. My 4-8 Omaha seat probably won't open for 5-6 hours. All the dirty leaches show up to watch the pro's.

Day 1B Ends w/ 183 Players; Lucas Ke Leads w/ 252K

SCHEDULE UPDATE: Due to the record field size in this event, the first six levels on Day 2 will be one hour long. Action will continue on Day 2 until 2:00 am or until the field is down to the final 36 players -- whichever comes first.

Day 1B at the World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star has come to a close and we have a massive field of at least 713 players. (Registration remains open until the start of Day 2.) That makes this the largest incarnation of this tournament in WPT history, smashing last year's record of 643 players. So Day 2 is going to have a very long march down to the money bubble here in San Jose, California.

The chip leader at the end of Day 1B is Lucas Ke with 252,000 and he pockets a $10,000 prize for his strong run on Tuesday. Other top stacks were bagged up by Ron Minnis (232,200), Shankar Pillai (201,000), James Carroll (191,000), Carlos Villamarin (182,000), and Shooting Star Jeff Madsen (173,200).

The Shooting Stars that were eliminated today include Bruce Buffer (who gave a rousing "Shuffle up and deal," announcement to kick off play today), Will Failla, Barry Greenstein, Galen Hall, Kyle Julius, Allen Kessler, Christina Lindley, local legend Pat Lyons, Ana Marquez, Chris Moorman, Ryan Riess, Vanessa Selbst, Joe Serock, Dan Shak, Dan Smith, and Jennifer Tilly.

Other notables to hit the rail were defending champion Kai Chang, Shannon Shorr, Tim West, Taylor Paur, Nick Schulman, Christian Harder, Jake Schwartz, Dylan Hortin, Jeremy Kottler, Max Steinberg, Nick Grippo, Kevin Eyster, Lazaro Hernandez, Matt Stout, and Dan O'Brien.

Tune back in tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT to follow along in live updates, chip counts, and photos as the 297 surviving players (plus last-minute entrants) begin their march to the money bubble here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

It's pretty large. I'm not sure exactly how many tables, but it is definitely the biggest Cardroom in Northern California. I think the only one bigger in ca is commerce.
