Some Observations From My Recent Vegas Trip.

Recommended Posts

I recently went to Vegas for a vacation and have some comments about the trip. First let me say I used to live in Vegas before moving to the Northwest many years ago. Since moving I have been back a few times but this is the first trip I visited multiple hotels to get a feel for the present day city. Any readers are welcome to make additional comments about any trips you have made to Vegas.

1) The interior of the Luxor {Egyptian themed resort} was quite impressive, and I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

2) The Golden Nugget's pool area is also worth seeing. It allows people to swim right up to a large aquarium containing large sharks and other fish. Also at the GN you can see the world’s largest publicly displayed golden nugget weighing in at 61 lbs. It was found at a trailer park in Australia with a metal detector.

3) The Strip seems to have less transients hanging around but maybe that was because it was very hot, averaging 105 degrees a day.

4) All the hotels are big on a thing called "Resort Fees". Mine was $20 a day. They don't tell you about this fee when you sign up on the internet. Well technically they do, but it's on the second page way down at the bottom, which is easy to miss and they don't include it in the total they give you. So a $420 trip turned into a $500 trip with resort fees.

5) Several hotels now have automated craps machines. And I saw a automated baccarat machine at the Venetian. With the craps machine they have about 8 terminals surrounding a domed bubble that has two large dice. You place your crap bets (and odds) at the terminal and then the dice start slightly bouncing until the shooter presses his shoot button and then the dice make a big bounce to roll the number. The machine somehow reads the dice and then you get credits added or subtracted from your credit total. When you want to leave you press the "cash out button", and it gives you a credit receipt you take to the cashier. I like it because you can sit down and play, but it is kind of noisy with a recorded voice loudly saying push the button or place your bets. I’ll bring earplugs next time.

6) I was surprised by the large amount of foreigners there. It seemed Europeans were everywhere. Also I counted 7 Latino radio stations on the FM radio. I think there might have been one when I lived there.

7) The ambiance of the Venetian was much better than I last remembered although spending $7.50 for a single dip ice cream cone was a bit high. Also, I spent a fortune on bottled water ($3 to 3.50 for a small) walking around on the hot days.

8) All Caesars properties (7 hotels in total) have the same mega bad beat jackpot on their live poker games. It’s up to about 900,000. But the catch is “everyone” at all 7 properties who are playing at the time it hits wins a portion if quad 7's get beat. So if quad 7's or better gets beat, the loser gets around 180,000, the winner gets about 90,000 and everyone playing at the 7 properties will get about 1,800. After a period of time, if no one hits, it will go to quad 6's or better getting beat and the total amount rises until it gets to 1 million.

9) The new Aria and Cosmopolitan hotels are huge and look quite impressive from the outside at night. I would like to stay there but it’s a little out of my price range.

10) My old neighborhood (4 streets) that used to be behind the Imperial Palace (now called the Quad) has been totally bulldozed and is now just an empty field. But that’s Vegas, out with the old and in with the new.. The inside of the old IP is totally different than it used to be. Actually, I liked the old casino better.

11) I checked out the WSOP at the Rio. The last time I went was at the height of the poker boom in 2005. Back then it had a huge Gaming supply Expo with many booths and celebrities. This time the only person I saw was Greg Raymer. Some average Joe walked up to him and Greg seemed pretty cool letting the guy take a picture of both of them together.

Overall, I lost a little trying to learn to play that crazy craps machine and of course at the poker table I would call everything with any pair of 7's or more and every suited connector going for the jackpot. All and all though it was a pretty good trip.

Dude, homeless people all around the strip sell bottles of water for a buck.

Yeah, I did see one, outside the Flamingo, but he was the only one I saw. So he saved me $2 but I paid full price for the other 10 or so I bought. I also got a few freebies (not including tip) at the poker room.

Also for some reason, most of the hotels I visited only sold Pepsi and had no Coke (which I prefer)..

I always get accosted by prostitutes.

Funny olden-days Vegas story.

I was walking on the strip at about 2:00 AM looking to score certain illicit substances when I encountered a group of about ten half-drunk "bros".

You know the type, baseball hat, collared shirt, when congregated into a group they throw off a collective aura of douchebag so bright it can be seen from the moon withuot the aid of magnification.

Of course, since I'm by myself, there's 10 of them and we're about the same age, they have to make a wise ass comment when I pass and given the way I was back then, it wasn't something I was about to let go. Spit in the one nearest to me's face. They immediately circle, waiting for whoever among them has the balls to move first. I fake-charge forward, turn around as quick as I can and grab the one who tried to get me from behind in a headlock, stab my needle through his cheek. Informed them that if they didn't turn around and start walking by the time I counted five, "Tyler here" would get shot up with enough shit to seize up every organ in his body (bluff, it was bone dry).

FIVE

FOUR (they stand there looking shocked and confused)

THREE (he screams and starts trying to pull away)

TWO (they turn around and walk but keep looking back at me)

I let Tyler out of the headlock with a bleeding hole in his cheek, robbed his pocket, told him I had AIDS then hauled ass into New York New York where I spent the next few hours blowing through his $400'ish at Roulette.

A+ thread.

While I enjoyed VegasKnights content this time...

Well thanks.

I've got a lot of Vegas stories from the years I lived there. I might bring some in when I get the time.

I know callbacks aren't funny unless they're worded exactly right. Oh well. I figured someone that still posts here would get it.

fuck that. i'm in town to gamble.

A couple of years ago, we had gone from Costa Rica up to Nicarauga for a couple of days. The border crossing is pretty dismal. At one point you need to wait in a big parking lot with a raised covered open air pavilion while they process your paperwork. You might see 6 or 7 bus loads of travellers and perhaps a dozen cars. You need to stay out of your vehicle. There are a bunch of stray dogs wandering around, most amazingly sweet even though very neglected and often abused. You get a few beggars (often crippled) mixed in with "currency exchangers" and vendors. They sell crappy random trinkets, food, and drinks.

After standing around in the heat and humidity for about an hour and a half, I bought a bottle of cold water from one of the old lady vendors. I screwed off the cap and took a huge swig. As I swallowed, I realized I never heard the familiar snap as the cap separated from the plastic ring. I tried to stop in mid gulp and wound up in a choking coughing fit as I spit the water on the ground. Looking through the bottle I could see it had "floaters" as if it had been filled from a lake, stream, or well.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have a few weeks of vacation. I don't know where I should go.

Vegas, Baby!! But since it's summer, and averages about 105 degrees a day, bring about $30 extra for the bottled water.
