IMO, if you only have been playing for 5 weeks and have one tournament cash, you are doing pretty good. Reading the books, developing and implementing a basic strategy based upon that, and getting experience will take you furter down the road than chasing everything to the river. From the books you have read you should be aware that most of the time, you end up being a percentage favorite to win. I was playing at my local casino with two empty chairs to my right. Player sits down, plays a hand, and give his friend $100 to buy chips. So they are both sitting side by side to my right. I could hear them chatting in some other language than english, both when the had no cards, and when they were in hands.
