Everybody should listen to this song, it is one of the highlights of recorded music, imho. Seriously.Gene Chandler- Rainbow '65
Gene 'The Motherfu
cking Duke of Earl' Chandler, a live recording from 1965. It's referred to as Rainbow '65, and is apparently one of the most famous and renowned live soul recording ever. The rest of the concert is up and down, but this song is just outstanding. The last couple minutes absolutely give me chills every time. The screaming girls don't even detract from it either - they add an air of excitement. You can so totally picture them fainting in the front row when he works his magic towards the end. I don't even wanna ruin it for anybody by telling you what to expect - I promise he will blow you away. Seriously, it is absolutely incredible. Anyways, Dilloriginals II
. Part 2 covers all of Donuts, and a few songs from Amplified. Gene Chandler's Rainbow '65
appears on Donuts on the track 'Last Donut of the Night,' but, as you'll hear, he only sampled the emcee's introduction. Chandler's performance isn't actually used at all - Dilla's track is created from The Moments' To You With Love
, which is also of course included in my compilation. Anyways, Dilla completely introduced me to that Gene Chandler track, and I think it was definitely a little wink on his part, sampling from the intro of it, and sort of leaving it there for us to find. And The Moments' vocals he uses on the song say, 'That's [what I] gave to you.' And Dilloriginals III
. Third and final part. This covers a lot of his earlier stuff - SV's Fantastic I and II, some stuff with Common, etc. I saved a couple real gems for the end, and I'll give you a very quick rundown of those 2:Stan Getz (at 2:04) = The Pharcyde's Runnin'
Ahmad Jamal (at 6:46) = De La's Stakes Is High
And the Jamal song is great. And a lot of the Fantastic Vol. II stuff is totally amazing. Players, of course, but also some ill Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock in there. The Herbie song is amazing - it fully embodies that cheesy 70s sound, and it's also beautiful.
