Question About Table Seating...

Recommended Posts

Hi there!I was playing at the local casino (empress in Joliet, IL) in their 1-2 nl table. About 30 minutes in one of the employees approached me before my BB and had me switch to another table. I was at a good table with position on two terrible players, only to be moved to a nitty table. I don't want to make a scene, but perhaps asking them not to move me before I'm seated is an option. Is this common? Can I protest it in the future?

I would definitely object. Did they give you a reason for wanting to move you? Were you the only one moved? In the end, the casino can pretty much do whatever it wants, but I would definitely speak up next time.

They move players around to fill seats at other tables, etc. To tell a player to move without warning is pretty screwed up. I mean if you openly protest at the table it could POSSIBLY offend players, or atleast make me out a rude shmuck to those who're oblivious to the reason I want to stay. Would rather avoid confrontation at the table.Heres an interesting scenario - i may welcome a table change sometimes. I should ask the poker room manager to ask me if I want to be switched in the future.

You were most likely playing at a game which had a must-move rule. In those cases, there is a main game together with a couple of feeder tables. For example, suppose there are three tables of the game running. There is a main table, a feeder table #1, and feeder table #2. The new players (always) get seated at the second feeder table and are put on the bottom of the must-move priority list. Once there is an open spot at the first feeder table, the player who is highest on the must-move priority list who is still seated at feeder table #2 gets moved to fill the vacancy. Similarly, once there is an open spot in the main game, the player at feeder table #1 who is highest on the move list gets moved to the main game. You cannot refuse to move. Your only other option is to rack up your chips and stand up. You then often have to wait 1/2 an hour before you are allowed to get back on the wait list to get back into the game (although you are allowed to get on the list for games at different stakes immediately). Not every game is a must-move style and if it isn't, then you are welcome to join any table and can even change tables if you do not like yours (provided you tell/ask the pit boss first). For example, at my local casino, they spread 2/4 LHE, 4/8 LHE, 1/2 NLHE, 2/2 PLO and 3/6 NLHE. Only the 3/6 NLHE game is a must-move format and they usually have 2 or 3 total tables operating. All the other games players are welcome to join any table they want and can change tables with permission of the pit (which is always granted).

It's actually quite annoying, because it's the only casino that I've heard of which has 3/6 NLHE... And to make it worse, they also have 3/6 LHE and 3/6 LHE w/ full kill (I omitted those in my first post to avoid confusion). As a plus, I've played at the 3/6 NLHE table before and had some 3/6 LHE players accidentally sit (and donate) at our table.

When I played live in the Grosvenor Casino in London, the game had a must-move rule, too. It happened that I had to leave a table with a big fish because of this, but what you can do. You must accept the house rules.
