a serious ? about praying for you to fail

Recommended Posts

So i've had these next door neighbors, whom i've known all my life, and they are very religious and follow the Catholic faith as best as they can. I went to Catholic school with there kids who are about the same age as me. They not only go to church, but are heavily involved in their parish which means they go on retreats, council the youth groups, pray in tounges during prayer meetings, don't believe in pre-marital sex, can't watch most cable shows cause it goes against god ect. ect. They are very good people and mean well, but they want everyone to be like them. And if you're not, then your not goin to heaven. So, the other day i was talkin to one of the girls who i went to school with and we started talkin about my poker playing. She believes that i'm goin down the wrong path and that i need to give my life to jesus and trust him to guide me away from my poker playing. So she told me that, over the last few years, she has been "praying" for me to "fail" in poker so i can hit rock bottom and come to jesus. Now, i know her intentions are in a good place, but don't you think that it's wrong to pray for someone to fail and be miserable in order for you to get what you think that person needs, which is jesus? I think asking a higher power, in this case jesus, to help make another person fail IS A FORM OF WITCHCRAFT. What do you guys think?

this is absurd, i consider myself a religious person and i have no regrets whatsoever about playing poker affecting me in afterlife in any way, shape, or form. playing poker doens't make you a bad person, it's absolutely absurd if she thinks you are doomed because you play poker. she is wrong, plain and simple, hopefully she will realize that one day. believe it or not, jesus or whatever higher being is out there isnt going to punish you for making money playing a legit game that causes no evil to others. hate to say it but that girl is a jopke, i hate when wackjobs like those people give religion a bad image.

Most Catholics don't have that big a problem with gambling. The priest in our church is in our fantasy football league for $70 a season. We even had a Monte Carlo night each year until the stupid NC gambling laws shut it down. Not every Catholic is as anal as those people...

Doesn't the bible say something about not gambling though?
the bible says a lot of things, a reference is made to something that could be interpreted as gambling but it doesnt say specifically that gambling is condemned, it just depends on how you look at it. the bible says a lot of things, and lots of them are meant to be taken figuratively not literally, it's important to get the broad meaning of the bible, not to look for every line in the bible and pick it apart. i fully believe that if you lived your life in a truthful and honorable manner and did your best to live your life in a proper way in respect to your religion that god or whoever couldn't care less if you played poker for a living.

ok, my question is; Is it "right" to spend energy on praying for someone to "fail" at something that they really want to achieve?I don't believe in a higher power at this moment, and i don't believe in witchcraft but, some strange things have happened to me these past few years that have caused me to go broke alot of times. I would almost have a sizeable bankroll but then something would happen in my life that would destroy it. Seemed like more than my share of bad luck.

In my senior year of high school, I was counseled by my pastor for about a month.A few years back (just so you know that I can relate), my mother was praying against the music I was working on, because it was not of God. The music did fail, probably not because she was praying against it, but I became a Christian.I'm not gonna preach to you. I despise people that are bible thumpers, but I'm just going to share a little bit with what my pastor was counseling on. I'm not Catholic mind you, so I don't know exactly if Catholicism condones this. But anyway, I was having a rough time in school, mostly because some of my peers were constantly harrassing me. It had been that way since about second grade, and old habits die hard. Well, I always got pissed at these guys. I would find myself verbally retaliating, and when I would go home each day, I would pray for God's wrath on them.Well, I was talking to my pastor about this. And here's what he said:"Don't pray for that. Pray that God blesses them. And don't just say that, MEAN that."I gave him a puzzled look."See, it's easy for you to pray down wrath on your enemies. It's human nature. But Jesus says, "I say unto, Love your enemies." Even he prayed to God on the cross to please forgive the people who did this to him. It did not mention him saying under his breath, 'But I know you're going to smite them in the end, Father.' So pray for blessings on them, and they will get them, and eventually, things will get better."I know this isn't parallel to what's going on. However, I think this fits. One, the lady who actually told you she was praying against your poker career is not exactly on the fast track to winning you to Jesus, is she? I'm sure that type of thing pushes you farther away. And if what you're doing is not of God in her book, then that would, in essence (even if she's your friend), would make you her enemy, am I right? So what SHOULD she be doing? Pouring down love on you. What she is doing is not lining up with the word of God. Do not worry about that. If she wants to pray that way, let her pray. She could pray the rosary and hail mary 100 times over, but I do not believe that God will grant her prayer on this one based on the ill will behind it.Just look at Daniel, a solid example of a Christian in the game, for a little bit of an example. I know there's some God-fearing players (If I'm right, Hoyt Corkins is one) in the game, and I'm sure they would be able to give you advice on this one.But that's my take on this. Don't expect her to change her views on poker, but don't let the fact that she's praying against you phase you.

Doesn't the bible say something about not gambling though?
On the contrary, the bible says a lot of things that point toward gambling not being sinful. In the book of Jonah, the shipmates and Jonah cast lots (a form of gambling back in Biblical times) to see who was the one God was sending his storm upon, to show who should jump in the ocean. In Acts, the 11 apostles cast lots to decide who would become the replacement for Judas, who as we know, hung himself after betraying Jesus.Words that point to gambling being a decent act. Just like, even though people will say there is something wrong with, the contrary for alcohol in the Bible (as Jesus turned water into wine, and even drank wine with the disciples at the last supper). However, both, if taken to their utmost extreme and turned into life-destroying vices, are sinful. Also, the Lord says that you should not serve two masters. Money can be a master of your life, if you let it. Because you will love one and hate the other. Of course, this could even be taken into a non-gambling person's life, say that they sacrifice church time, family time, etc, in exchange for overtime pay.So, there is nothing biblical that denounces gambling as a sin.

is gambling against the Bible? no its not is it alright to pray for the failure of others? If yoru sole reason for praying for the failure of another is to see harm to them then yes. We are told to never pray for death to our enemies so it all comes down to what our real desire is. If we are going to pray for something along those lines it is much better to pray that God would reveal himself through the suffering as another poster already said. A christian should never wish ill things on others. On the gambling i know there are plenty of churchs that will call it wrong. But as we have already discussed...a lot of churchs live under legalism. They think that the Bible is there to restrict life to how God wants it. Christianity is the complete opposite though. It sets us free from life. Romans 6 talks about how we were set free from the bonds of slavery. Are there things taht we are not supposed to do? Of course but they are all well within reason...like dont murder or lie to others or covet thy neighbors wife. But there are many many things that are "added" into the Bible by people with good intentions but wrong reasons. I know that many of yall who arent christians can list ways that christians have tried to restrict ur life. Well you are right to challenge them on it. For the most part its a very conservative (not politically) view and its unfortunate that it taints the message if u will

ok, so the last part of my question is; Do you think that praying for something bad to happen to another is a form of Witchcraft?
No. I just simply believe it's someone who doesn't fully understand God's will trying to take matters into their own hands, even though they are praying to God. Even when you are praying to him, you are praying against what his will is.

No. Main reason being, there is no such thing as witchcraft.

Your question is terribly flawed. Why do you think there exists some big difference between witchcraft and religion? Where's the line of demarcation? For most people, the location of the line is determined by their proximity to it...Ice

pray in tounges during prayer meetings
Catholics do not routinely speak in tongues. It is a very rare occurance. Please, don't confuse Catholicism with some of those 'crazy' Fundamentalist Christian religions.
I would tell her she needs to pray for her cults priests to stop raping young boys.
I find this to be in very bad taste and extremely uncalled for. Catholicism, and Christianity in general, is one of the oldest religions on the planet. Hardly a cult.If you don't have anything meaningful to contribute, then you should say nothing at all.

First of all, xtianity and it's offshoots are nowhere NEAR the oldest religions in the world, it's absurd to say so, and evidence of some form of indoctrination.Secondly, Catholic priest have raped young boys, and been covered up for time and time again. And you say me stating that FACT is uncalled for, and say nothing about that nastiness. Sick. Finally, a cult can be defined as: A religious system of worship. So, semantically you can't find fault with the term, even if you don't aggree with it's uglier connotations like I do.Go dance with some snakes or something, and leave the rhetoric to those with a knack for it.

hey nopunk, they speak in tounges. On a regular basis. They Have prayer meetings once a week. They have retreats. They are Catholic. I use to be part of it when i was a kid. I know they do these things on a regular basis. Have you ever been in a room with about 20-30 people and they're all speaking in tounges at the same time? It's a little scary. Kind of like a cult. But, when you have gone to a few meetings, it becomes normal. And you even will want to speak in tounges yourself.I just think that this girl next door to me prays because she believes that it does some good to pray. Like if a family member is coming home on a slippery road and she prays that they'll be safe. Or she prays that her friend will be ok after getting into a car accident and having to go through surgery to survive. If she believes that praying for these things helped the situation come to a happy ending, then she also believes that if she prays for me to fail at poker, then it will happen and i will fail. That, my friends, sounds like a witch to me.

There is exactly one difference between a 'cult' and a 'religion'. Size.Religions are simply big cults. Cults are religions that haven't hit the mainstream yet.Mensch
