In my opinion The BEST NL holdem Player all time. Question for Mr. Daniel Negreanu: "What was it like to play against him at that time? Where did you play against him? What was that something that made him so good?" To be honest I would appriciate anythhing that Mr. Negreanu could remember about Mr. Stu Ungar. Where, when, how did it felt etc... I have read about him from Wikipedia, but sadly it doesn't satisfy my curiosity.

Great question .. obviously someone who has a trophy named after them should be included in the all-time greats list. Two things that I have come to know about him. One he could play all the games and never backed down from anyone. And two, he had the great ability to get a read on the situation and get the most out of it if he could work it into his favor.

If you watch some of the coverage of his win over Andy Blok in the first 'player's championship', which ultimately lead to his name going on the trophy, you will see that he did suck-out a few times, but also was able to manipulate Andy even though he was an extreme short stack.

Hopefully Daniel can chime in on this a bit ... I hear he has the weekend off now. Can't wait to see his explaination video ... see you at the tables ...

My question originates from Mr. Negreanu's commentary in one of the NHL charity shootout in 2009, where he said something about most surreal moment in poker- was playing against Stu Ungar.

I'm thinking Daniel briefly addressed this a while back; anyone certainly correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure that won't be a problem for some around here), but I think he reported playing with him once or twice at Bellagio after it first opened around 1998. That was shortly (maybe months or less) before Stuey died. I also think Mike Sexton had stated at that point in his life Stuey was the "live one" at the table.

Finally someone gets the point. I can find information or movies about Stu Ungar, but I am interested mostly about Mr. Negreanu's thoughts when he had the chance to play against him. still waiting for some kind of link or answer from Mr. Negreanu.

Stu Ungar and Daniel Negreanu didn't have intersecting careers except for one cashgame that they played. He said that he was at the table with his then poker playing Asian girlfriend (I don't remember her name, as she doesn't seem to be popular anymore, but she was a featured player with David Williams at one of the earlier poker sites, around the time his "ass-eating porno tape" with that 40-something year old cougar pornstar came out (funny how people forgot all about that incident lol, I guess people don't care about that kinda shit anymore, in the long run).

Anyway, Daniel, and his girlfriend, who I remember now, was Evelyn Ng, and a few other players were playing a cashgame, that was at something like $25-$50 Pot Limit Omaha. I remember Daniel specifying that the game was pot limit omaha and limit holdem because he said that Stu Ungar was playing absolutely terrible. You have to understand that this game was towards the end of Stu Ungar's life, basically close to the time when he was about to die, like in a few weeks time. Daniel said that Stu looked horrible and was in really bad shape, and that even though he knew how good Stu was supposed to be, since it's hard to forget that the guy was pretty much the best and most legendary player in the world at that time, it didn't erase the fact that Stu was playing like shit, and losing tons of money, especially donking it away at the Limit Holdem games. Understand that Daniel Negreanu is a virtual Limit Holdem expert, or at least was, so him saying that Stu was playing like shit, wasn't him saying that Stu Ungar was a fish who people were exaggerating about, no. He was simply saying that Stu Ungar wasn't the type of player that was built to win at limit Holdem, seeing as Limit Holdem is a game that professionals play in order to decrease variance and volatility with chipstacks in cashgames. Stu Ungar was the type of player who had a tremendous advantage over players who were scared to gamble or make touch decisions. So Daniel basically said that even though he got to play with Stu that one time, and perhaps a couple other times, he said that Stu was already too affected by his drug addiction, his breathing problems, alcoholism, etc, to be bothered to play good poker at stakes that were much lower than he used to play, when you consider that he was used to sitting with six figure stacks of money in cashgames, at a time when that was an even bigger deal than it is now, with the advent of high stakes online cash game poker.

I can't remember where Daniel posted those thoughts, but understand that I have literally read every single article in Daniel's blog. I started reading his blog over 8 years ago, when I was starting out on educating myself about professional poker players opinions on the game. Back then he used to write at least 3 or 4 blog articles a week, and he combined his blog with his earlier real poker articles that he ran for Cardplayer magazine, back when he was a small fry before he was knocking down seven figure pay days at WPT tournaments. I remember not liking his play style that much, since I was obsessed with Phil Ivey myself, but I respected the fact that he was a definite solid poker professional, and his opinions and thoughts really helped me out in developing an analytical mindset for not just the game of poker, but for the general metagame of games and how they intersect with life. I wish he used to write like he did in the old days because his new fans don't realize what a keen mindset he had during that time in poker. Daniel is one of those people that maybe kind of annoying as a person, sometimes, when he goes too far, or does something kind of against the grain, but when it comes to poker matters, his opinions are usually the most reliable. He can be overly opinionated from time to time, but he would be as boring and undependable as Phil Ivey is, if he didn't post a controversial opinion from time to time. You never really get the feeling that you "know" Phil Ivey, even on his ESPN special, you get the feeling that he's kind of always showing his best side. Daniel isn't afraid to show his vulnerabilities, and that is why I consider him a better poker celebrity than Phil Ivey. But he is an even bigger celebrity now, than he was when he decided to stop actively blogging, and only vlogging a couple times a month, so I don't expect him to suddenly start blogging daily, again,
