2008-09 Cheap Thieves

Recommended Posts

FORWARDS:1. Olli Jokinen, PHO. $2.00 08-09 Projection: GP 82 G 35 A 50 P 85 With a new team and new line mates you can expect Olli to produce just as well as he did in Florida, if not better depending on what direction coach Wayne Gretzky decides to take the team. All clues lead to a more fast paced approach and playing alongside Shane Doan should be considered an upgrade.2. Anze Kopitar, LA. $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 Projection: GP 78 G 33 A 45 P 78 The Kings will be led by the center for years to come and he is expected to be a point a game producer for his entire career. While LA isn't a playoff team, the offense is one of their strengths and Kopitar is deadly on the power play. 3. Corey Perry, ANA. $1.25 $1.25 $1.25 $1.25 ProjectionL GP 80 G 35 A 45 P 80 This will be the first season where Perry and Getzlaf will be considered the 1-2 punch on the first line with Selanne being delegated to the second line to play alongside Brendan Morrison. Perry is a goal scorer and appears to have recovered completely from a late season injury. The young duo of Perry and Getzalf is one of the best in the entire league.4. Simon Gagne, PHI. $4.75 $5.25 $6.00 $7.25 Projection: GP 68 G 32 A 30 P 62 A sure fire bet to score 40 goals when healthy, major question marks surround Gagne's future as he has suffered from concussions that could be career threatening. One more hit, and that could be the end of Gagne. If he is able to recover completely, expect Gagne to perform well on a deadly line with Daniel Briere.5. Alexander Semin, WAS. $3.50 $4.00 $4.50 $5.00 Projection: GP 78 G 35 A 33 P 68 Semin battled with injuries early last season but had a much better second half. Semin has the benefit of playing behind one of the most dynamic players ever to play in the NHL, Alexander Ovechkin, which gives him some breathing room as he doesn't have to face opposing teams top checking line. He is also a fixture on the power play.6. Jason Pominville, BUF. $1.75 $2.00 $2.25 $2.50 Projection: GP 82 G 34 A 39 P 73 With the departure of Drury and Briere from Buffalo, Pominville became the leading man in Buffalo and he answered the call with an 80 point season. There is still plenty of firepower in Buffalo so you can expect to see similar numbers from the young forward. 7. Henrik Sedin, VAN. $4.25 $4.75 $5.25 Projection: GP 82 G 17 A 57 P 74 What you see from Henrik is likely what you are gong to get. Always an underdog to score 20 goals, the past first twin prefers dishing the puck and is always amongst the leaders in the assist category. 8. Ryan Malone, TB. $0.50 $0.50 Projection: GP 77 G 25 A 24 P 49 A lot is expected of the gritty winger as the Thieves let go of youngster Jussi Jokinen. Malone will join a much improved Lightning squad that shouldn't have problems putting the puck in the next and Malone will be an important player on the power play. His projections look very similar to last season's out put, but he could top the 30 goal mark is he lands the job on Lecavalier's wing.9. Lee Stempniak, STL. $0.50 $0.50 $0.50 $0.50 Projection: GP 80 G 18 A 25 P 43 Not a whole lot is expected from Stempniak as rookie T.J. Oshie waits in the wings in St.Louis. If Oshie is able to make a splash in his rookie season you can expect to see Stempniak get moved to another team looking for a depth player.10. Raffi Torres, CLB. $2.25 Projection: GP 77 G 14 A 21 You can call this campaign Raffi's last chance as management neglected to sign him past this season despite having the option to sign him at $2.25 for five years. No one is sure what to expect from Torres, but his upside is limited, especially playing in Columbus the focus is defense first.11. Eric Belanger, MIN. $0.50 $0.50 $0.50 Projection: GP 76 G 12 A 21 P 33 A lot was expected from Belanger early last season and he delivered out of the gate but then his play slipped dramatically and he was demoted back to his more natural role as a third line center. Belanger is just keeping the seat warm for heralded rookie Benoit Pouliot who is waiting in the wings to get his chance on one of the scoring lines. If that happens this season, it will be Belanger's last with the Thieves.12. Jason Chimera, CLB. $0.50 Projection: GP 81 G 15 A 16 P 31 Chimera isn't expected to see much playing time but in past seasons the gritty, third line winger has come up when asked to play for the Thieves. With Torres being resigned for one season, that will mean that Chimera becomes expendable and has been involved in trade talks.13. Petr Kalus, MIN. $1.00 Projection: N/A Call this one a gaffe by management. Drafted in the 4th round Kalus was called up prematurely to make room for a draft pick that ended up being Brett Skinner, a player that was later dropped. So instead of Kalus being on the farm at a rate of $0.50 that doesn't count against the cap, he is occupying a roster spot on a team where the Thieves boast two other forwards: Eric Belanger and Benoit Pouliot. Kalus may not make it through the season with the team.DEFENSE: 1. John-Michael Liles, COL. $1.75 $2.00 $2.25 Projection: GP 80 G 8 A 30 P 38 The price for acquiring Liles was steep and the team will be hoping he can once again be the offensive threat that can surpass the 40 point plateau. He comes to the team as the #1 defenseman on the team so he will get lots of playing time.2. Cory Murphy, FLA. $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 Projection: GP 75 G 7 A 26 P 33 The future for Murphy in Florida looks bleak with the addition of Bryan McCabe to the roster. At this point, Murphy is in a dog fight to even make the team so a change of scenery would be welcomed. A capable power play QB, Murphy sits behind both Jay Bouwmeester and Bryan McCabe on the depth chart in Florida. 3. Brent Seabrook, CHI. $1.75 $1.75 $1.75 $1.75 $1.75 Projection: GP 78 G 8 A 24 P 32 Seabrook will again be teamed with Duncan Keith on the bluel ine, but newly acquired defenseman Brian Campbell is expected to eat up a lot of the minutes on the power play. Nevertheless, the young blue liner is a key part of the Blackhawks and is expected to put up deason numbers this season.4. Roman Hamrlik, MON. $13.50 Projection: GP 75 G 5 A 23 P 28 Hamrlik is past his prime and isn't expected to put up huge numbers. His high price tag is more a function of the free agent market and also managements decision to skip this year's free agent draft. Hamrlik will not be resigned past this season and he will certainly be a free agent next season.5. Steve Staios, EDM. $0.25 Projection: GP 80 G 8 A 13 P 21 With defense being a weakness on the Thieves, Staios gets to see some ice time despite not being much of an impact player. He fills a hole, but the team is hoping to have a youth movement on the blue line and Staios doesn't fit into those plans.6. Tom Poti, WAS. $1.50 $1.50 $1.50 $1.50 Projection: GP 75 G 3 A 21 P 24 Oh how the mighty have fallen. There was some expectation that Poti would QB a powerful Washington power play, but the emergence of Mike Green in Washington has spoiled that party. Poti is a capable player, but more is expected of him offensively.7. Toni Lydman, BUF. $4.00 Projection: GP 73 G 6 A 13 P 19 Maybe the most overpriced player on the team, Lydman will definitely be a free agent next year with that inflated price tag. There is some hope that he'll improve his point totals slightly, but the truth of the matter is that he is back with the team only because management could not be at this year's draft.8. Kris Russell, CLB. $0.25 Projection: GP 70 G 4 A 14 P 18 A lot is expected from the sophomore after a decent rookie campaign. Russell is a naturally offensive defenseman, but as is the case with most young defensemen, offense usually comes later. Down the road it's not out of question to see Russell develop into a 40 point man in this league.9. Marc-Edouard Vlasic, SJ. $1.00 Projection: GP 81 G 3 A 17 P 20 While Pickles is one of the best young defenseman in the league logging loads of ice time, he simply isn't going to develop much offensively and his upside is limited. His future with the team is uncertain and the next two seasons will go a long way towards determining that future. 10. Aaron Ward, BOS. $0.25 Projection: GP 73 G 4 A 11 P 17 Just another warm body filling space. Ward is an underdog to stick with the team as players from the farm will be called up this season and Ward is at the top of the list of players being cut. GOAL:1. San Jose Sharks $4.50 $5.00 Evgeny Nabakov and the Sharks were excellent last season and you can expect more of the same this year. One of the best teams in the league with a high end goalie. San Jose is expected to once again be among the top defenses in the league this year.2. Vancouver Canucks $3.50 $4.00 $4.50 $5.00 Few could argue that Roberto Luongo is possibly the best goaltender in the league. He suffers from a lack of goal support and last season his saw his defense decimated with injuries. With a healthy defense, Luongo and the Canucks are expected to be one of the more stingy teams in the league.3. New York Rangers $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 $2.50 Henrik Lundqvist has solidified himself as a premier talent and award winner year in and year out. The Rangers team, losing Jagr, will look to be even more defensively responsible this season and if Henrik gets off to a quicker start than normal, the Rangers could go places. Lundqvist helps round out a fantastic starting three that includes Nabakov and Luongo.FARM:FORWARDS:1. Andrei Kostitsyn, MON. $2.00 Projection: GP 77 G 26 A 25 P 51 Kostitsyn has already established himself as an NHL player and the departure of Alexei Kovalev from the Cheap Thieves opens the door for him to be an everyday contributor to the team. 2. Kyle Okposo, NYI. $2.00 Projection: GP 80 G 21 A 31 P 52 Okposo shined in a late season stint last season and with an offensively challenged team like the Islanders, Okposo will get every chance to prove himself in the NHL. A force in the NCAA, Okposo is a player in the mold of Jarome Iginla.3. Bobby Ryan, ANA. $2.00 Projection: GP 71 G 12 A 25 P 37 The second overall pick behind Sidney Crosby, Ryan has taken a slower path to the NHL in large part because there was too much traffic in front of him in Anahiem with Selanne and Perry ahead of him on the depth chart. Ryan will eventually become a strong power forward in the NHL, but the Thieves will likely ride Perry hard this season and play a wait and see game with Ryan.4. T.J. Oshie, STL. $1.00 Projection: GP 77 G 14 A 25 P 39 A third round steal in the entry draft Oshie looks to graduate this season to the Blues after back-to-back strong seasons in the NCAA. Oshie will likely join the team for a playoff push, but won't stick with the team throughout the season playing behind Lee Stempniak in St.Louis.5. Jack Skille, CHI. $1.50 Projection: GP 60 G 10 A 11 P 21 Skille did play in Chicago last season, but this year expects to stick with the club all year long. The prospects of playing on a win with the likes of Jason Toewes and Patrick Kane are exciting, but don't expect Skille to put up big numbers this season. He will be available for the playoff push, but likely won't stick with the Thieves for the duration of the season.6. Benoit Pouliot, MIN. $2.00 Projection: N/A Pouliot had a rocky start to his pro career but things are looking up for him as the coaching staff is impressed with him of late. He will make the Wild this year and ease into a scoring role hopefully by season's end.7. Nicklas Bergsfor, NJ. $0.50 Projection: N/A Barring a shoulder injury last season, Bergsfor would have made the Devils and played a full season in the NHL. Instead he struggled in Lowell recovering from the injury but is fully expected to make the Devils this season.DEFENSE:1. Alex Goligoski, PIT. $0.50 With the injury to Sergei Gonchar Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski will be called upon to play an offensive role in Pittsburgh, a great opportunity to score some points playing on a potent offense. Goligoski is a more complete package than Letang and has a bright future. With the Thieves desperately needing scoring from the blue line, Goligoski's development will be closely watched.2. Ivan Vishnevskiy, DAL. $1.50 Next in line to take over the role of Sergei Zubov is this offensive juggernaut. Vishnevskiy may not make the team this season but he is being looked to as Dallas' power play QB of the future.3. Jonathon Blum, NAS. $1.50 Blum will not see any NHL time this season especially with the logjam of offensive minded blue liners in Nashville, but he is expected to be a good one in all facets of the game.4. Taylor Chorney, EDM. $0.25 He has been impressive in camp and has an outside chance of making the team. Don't expect to see him in the Thieves lineup for at least another season.5. Marc-Andre Gragnani, BUF. $0.25 An offensive force in the Q, the Sabres just don't seem to know what to do with the diminutive d-man. They have been trying him out at forward and that's the last thing the Thieves need. Gragnani played some for the Sabres last season and is hoping to get the call again this year. 6. Jamie McBain, CAR. $0.50 A solid 4th round pick he's been developing nicely and the team has high hopes for him. Just not this season.7. Dustin Kohn, NYI. $0.25 A late round gamble that doesn't look to be panning out as hoped. He may play in the NHL, even this season, but he won't turn into an offensive threat at the NHL level. 8. Keith Seabrook, WAS. $0.50 The Thieves drafted Brent's younger brother in the hopes that he would follow in his footsteps, but that doesn't seem to be the case. A decent defenseman in college, Keith's offensive abilities have yet to show themselves. This is a make or break season for him to prove he can put up some points.9. Mark Katic, NYI. $3.00 Katic is a speedster with some potential, but he'll never be able to live up to that contract. A miss step by Thieves management in gambling on the defenceman, burning a second round draft pick to go after the only under aged player ever drafted by the team.

you have a very good group of forwards, however i think you will admit you have the worst blueline in the division...It should be noted that my salary cap will be $122 this year..Good luck to me.

How is the cap determined in your league? Are you way over the league cap? There are things about your league I don't get..

We all start with $60 every year...You can then trade to acquire more cash..So I have acquired through trade over the years for this year another $32 in cash....So i can spend $92 to sign players this year..After that during the year you cant go over $30 more than what you started with..For example if you are at the cap you cant acquire players $30 more than your original cap...hope that helps

Alex Goligoski-D- Penguins Sep. 27 - 10:58 am et If Sergei Gonchar's injury keeps him out for an extended period of time, the word is that Alex Goligoski will take over Gonchar's various roles until he returns. There still is no word on whether Gonchar will require surgery on his separated shoulder. With the Penguins defense corps already very thin due to other injuries, the rumor is that Goligoski will work on the top line and play the point on the power-play. No need to overreact and either draft Goligoski or pick him up on the waiver wire just yet. Best advice for poolies is to take a wait and see apporoach. The first question that needs to be answered is will Gonchar require the surgery which will keep him out for a few months.Source: Montreal Gazette

Lee Stempniak-W- Blues Sep. 27 - 10:31 am et The Blues are experimenting with a five-forward power play with Lee Stempniak on one of the points. With the injury to Erik Johnson, St. Louis coach Andy Murray has to be creative and Stempniak could benefit. If he can keep this job, Stempniak will certainly improve on the 37 points he registered last season. Even if he does not receive a significant amount of power-play ice time, Stempniak looks poised to rebound as he is slated to start on the Blues' second line alongside Brad Boyes and Andy McDonald.Source: St. Louis Post Dispatch

Simon Gagne...September 27 11:58amFlyers forward Simon Gagne is in very bad shape. Rumours out of Philadelphia are he is one hit away from joining the likes of Brett Lindros and Eric Daze. Keep an eye on this has been and drop him if you must.Source: Pickering Daily

John-Michael Liles-D- Avalanche Sep. 27 - 8:43 am et John-Michael Liles is a prime candidate to rebound this season. If you are looking for a defenseman who is bound to improve from last season's numbers, Liles is your man. He was a solid 45-point producer from 2005-2007 but lost his way last year under the pressure of playing for a contract. Now that he has re-signed for four years and is healthy, look for Liles to regain his offensive touch and register 45-50 points.Source: Rocky Mountain News

Bobby Ryan-W- Ducks Sep. 27 - 7:39 am et Although there is a possibility that Bobby Ryan will be sent to the minors to make cap room to sign Teemu Selanne, it does not seem likely.Ryan, who is on a two-way contract, can be demoted to the minors without clearing waivers and could earn up to $1.8 million with bonuses this year. His demotion to the minors could free up enough cap space to ink Selanne. However, the Ducks have been very pleased with the physical conditioning, attitude and performance of Ryan this pre-season and he is pegged to start with Selanne and Brendan Morrison on the team's second line. Watch his performance from here on in to see if he is vulnerable.Source: LA Times

Brad Boyes is dying to play with Stempniak. He thinks that they would be dynamite together.

Gonchar will attempt rehab without surgery.

Is it better than the line combo tracker that nhl.com used to have and is still available if you have the secret?

Better.Wooo! It has Matt Moulson playing on a line with Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown 72% of the time! $0.25 contract baby!EDIT: I misunderstood the numbers.. they aren't percentages. It appears they are the number of shifts those 3 have taken together in preseason on ES and PP. Still not bad.
