I know it's unintentional, but you can better believe they thank me every time I point out that they've said it because they're horrified they might say it around someone who might care and might not know them well enough that they have no ill intention

Oh geez... flashbacks to my neighbor across the street chasing down her cat that escaped the house. "Hey _______ come back or the Mexicans will get you". Um... wtf.

When a coach refers to a player as an "animal" the pigmentation of the player's skin doesn't cross my mind. If you immediately connect "animal" with a person of colour then maybe you're racist.

I don't think Torts was being racist or intended to be. But I think our choices are either to tell black people to just forget about the history behind a word used hatefully or point it out when it is used in a way that may be hurtful, since that helps everyone. Ignoring it is not helpful. If people called Torts racist, that's a problem if it didn't appear to be intentional, but calling it a racial slur is accurate, even if it's unintentional. I have family members on my non-Jewish side who still use the word "Jew" in the context of to cheat someone. I know it's unintentional, but you can better believe they thank me every time I point out that they've said it because they're horrified they might say it around someone who might care and might not know them well enough that they have no ill intention

Do you also point out when you hear someone say Hip Hip Hooray?

Do you think Howard Cosell's famous 'Look at that little monkey scamper' was okay?

"Monkey" is a fairly common derogatory term so probably not.

Cosell was never accused of being racist, just of using an improper word with racist connotations. So does that mean the majority of society was racist, because they saw the use differently than Cosell?

Like I said, it's a fairly common derogatory term so the connection is reasonable. Using the word "animal" to describe a player and/or his play refers to his performance and has nothing to do with race.

I dont disagree with that at all. But I disagree that, because some may take that as a racist term, it means they're racist.

Serious question:

Is it acceptable to say, "Dan is a Jew?"

Obviously it sounds better to say, "Dan is Jewish" but is the first one acceptable too?

I understand your point, but I didn't say making that connection made someone racist; I said they may be racist.

Is this Seinfeld? It's about intent, and the former is certainly not an unacceptable term, whereas something like "kike" would never be ok. But I'd be inclined to not use "Jew" in public unless I was very aware of who would potentially hear it and in what context.

It probably has nothing to do with race. Except look at a few media studies and tell me how often the word "animal" (or similar) is used to describe a black player vs a white player. Or maybe the word "gritty" or "intelligent".

And maybe it never has to do with race. But maybe we can find a better word than one that was used derogatorily towards a specific race for a long time.

Lol... Matt Murray was pictured on that main stats page for a while, but I guess his 4 gp no longer qualifies.

4-0, 1.25 gaa, 0.961 sv%...

Long way to go to keep up with Devan and Tuukka though.
