An ailing Chad Brown finds peace—and payouts—at the poker table

BY DAVID GREISMAN

It has been a little more than three years since Chad Brown was diagnosed with cancer, and the toll that the battle has taken on one of the dominant tournament poker players of the modern era is strikingly evident.

Brown wants to remain in the game where he has found success and now finds comfort. But he also recognizes that people see the physical consequences of his struggle and may have questions that they are uncomfortable asking.

Brown: One of the top tournament players of the past decade

“It’s only fair to say where things are at, what’s going on, and let the chips fall where they fall,” Brown, 52, said on a February evening.

He has liposarcoma, a cancer that develops from fat cells. Brown’s cancer is in his abdomen. The surgeries he’s had in the past to remove it are no longer an option. His future health depends on finding the right medication, even though no drug out there will truly be a cure. No matter how much we want this to be one of those stories about a player overcoming adversity thanks to the game he loves, it will not be.

The only time I actually have seen him play was I think in a televised WSOP stud event from a decade ago. I think in that broadcast they kept talking about how Ted Forrest's previously won bracelet(s?) had been stolen. In retrospect, he pawned that shit at best, with insurance fraud on the table as well.

My point is this: as someone who used to watch so much tournament poker that I remember random stud events I saw a decade ago, I now am so detached from it that I had no idea Chad Brown had turned himself into one of the most dominant players of the modern era.

If anyone wants an idea for a web app that will generate a ****load of traffic, here ya go.

Some years back, a guy I knew- who was a shitbag- died in an accident.

Reading the saccharine garbage posted on his obituary page was intollerable. I wasn't the only one who knew this particular person had zero morals or ethics, was a professional thief, cheated on every woman he ever married and kicked puppies. So there's John Smith posting about what a great guy he was, but not 4 months earlier, the stiff was on my patio, drunkenly talking shit abuot John to me.

He had a nickname- lets say Scooter. Someone actually started the site "InMemoryOfScooter.com" which they renewed for a couple years, then let expire. I instantly had an idea and bought the domain but when it came time to pull the trigger, realized that I just didn't want to deal with all the heat and hate such a site would generate, not to mention that I'm not really a shitbag even though I may play one on the internet...

I was going to make a site that allowed people to post obituary rebuttals.

A few properly structured webforms for seo (deceased name, town, DOB, DOD, Schools, etc) and a link to a published obit, then they could put whatever comments they wanted... and if you really wanted to scumbag it up, you could charge a $109 administrative fee for removal ala the mugshot publishing game which friends and families would pay. This was pre sites like "TheDirty" which have since gone on to massive popularity.

I couldn't bring myself to do it but if anyone has moral fiber worse than my own, there ya go.
