Rebuy Tournaments: Good Thing Or Bad Thing?

Recommended Posts

I've been away from poker for a few years. One of the biggest changes I've noticed is the proliferation of rebuy tournaments.

It seems that the majority of tourneys are now rebuy/add on. I know that the Borgata's daily tournaments are damn near all rebuys. Looking at the WSOP schedule online tonight, 90% of the tourneys scheduled in primed time are rebuys. 888 poker is not far behind. And I've given up on Party... their interface just blows.

Anyway, I really don't like rebuys. For the same old arguments that say something like: "gives the deep pockets an edge" etc.

But I also think it takes away from the "one shot to get it right" way of thinking.

Thoughts?

It's a snowy Tuesday in NJ and I have some Knob Creek, some money in my online account and nowhere to go for the rest of the week.

Life is good.

...do you mean re-entry?

I suppose it's a matter of semantics. As a physicist, I think of NASA when I see the word re-entry. But the site uses the word "rebuy." And in certain cases the use "rebuy/add-on."

But I'm refering to the ability to repurchase chips when you have busted in a tournament. Whatever the terminology, I think they ruin the whole concept of a tournament.

Well, in Florida, they're clearly labeled re-entry. You bust...you can re-enter with a new stack in a new seat on a new table. A rebuy tournament typically means you can double your starting stack immediately and if you bust, you can buy back in for that same seat. There's also usually an add-on and you normally only pay rake on the first entry. So basically, there is an important distinction.

Alright already. There is a distinction.

So after all of this: Do you have an opinion on either side? Or are you just being obtuse?

Yeah...since being a douche is going to get you more responses. Luckily Cobalt is actually a really nice guy and will still probably answer you despite you being a schmuck.

Lol relax. Fargo you sure are quick to snap on people. I'm not a bright guy and I can clearly see what he meant by his original question even though he used the wrong word.. But calling him a douche when his question is clear and it isn't getting answered is a stretch.

Here is my answer. In one day tourneys I'm ok with re-entering, usually they close it after 2 levels which is pretty quick. It does suck to bust after half an hour if you drove somewhere far away, also it is nice to build prize pools since one day tourneys usually aren't that big.

With multiple starting day tourneys (which I have never played before so my opinion doesn't really count) I like the idea for tournaments where you can't re-enter that day, but you can come back the next day.

As for the idea where you can play each day, and take your biggest stack into day 2, or combine your stacks, or whatever... I don't like it. It just seems like it is giving the better players a bigger advantage when they already have the advantage of being a better player.

As for the wsop, there are so many amateurs that go to fire just one bullet in the 1k or 1.5k tourneys, they already get a shitload of people, so I don't like it. If I go with one bullet, I don't want to be sitting next to a guy willing to fire off 15 bullets. It also makes it shitty for satellite players. Is reentering happening in those events though? (edit) oh see I'm an idiot, he is talking about wsop.com, I thought he was talking about the actual WSOP. lol New Jersey

When someone fires unnecessary comments at people I know and like, I'll say something.

He accused cobalt of being obtuse, and you called him a douche. That is out of line, but if you feel like doing that is necessary to stick up for people you like then go for it.

To be fair to Fargo, 'obtuse' is a pretty loaded and potentially offensive phrasing.

To be fair to Pot, I may've been a little unintentionally snarky...but I really did want to be clear on the question.

I've never particularly liked rebuy tournaments, but I know that others do. Whether I hate re-entry depends on my BR and mindset any given day. Part of me hates that the tournaments on WPN are re-entry, but there are certainly days where I wish there was that option in certain Bovada tournaments.

To Fargo: You stood up for a friend, I admire that. Loyalty is rare these days.

To Cobalt: Yes it was not the best phrasing and I probably should not have used it. And thanks for the nod to the reason I was a little frustrated.

To King: How the hell are you? It's been a while.

Okay, enough arguments about trivial things.

Group hug?

Bolded.

But yeah, w/r/t question: It seems you're associating rebuys online with multi-entries live. Both are fine. I'm not a huge fan of rebuys live (except for PLO rebuys where they are needed as edges are smaller and there are more flips), but I am a HUGE fan of multi-entries as they increase prizepools without giving someone with massively deep pockets a chance to accumulate chips.

As for online, rebuys are fine. You can go nuts and try and get a huge stack and your swings are going to be huge or you can nit it up and just be prepared to adjust your style of play for those who DO go nuts. Then you can just profit off those guys. Find a style that suits you well. Experiment at lower rebuys until you become comfortable.

Once again, if you were talking more about live tourneys, then there aren't that many tourneys I can think of that are true rebuys.
