Omaha 8 is quickly becoming my favourite and most profitable game. In the only two sit-n-go's I entered, I finished second both times. Though despite being in the lead for most of the game, when it got down to heads up I got my butt handed to me both times (even though I had an equal or greater chip stack when heads up began). In almost every other card game, I consider heads up and short handed play to be my strength, so why am I getting it handed to me in Omaha? Is there a secret to playing heads up in Omaha 8? Or when the blinds get that high, is it simply a matter of luck?

Heads up in Omaha 8, you have to play almost every hand. Of course you still fold 449K, but almost every hand is worth seeing a flop. Heads up, Omaha 8 should be played a lot like Omaha, with low cards only being an added bonus. Yes, there is a lot of luck involved HU, but experience will teach you ways to overcome this.

Thanks. I believe I only folded once in both games in the small blind, so I don't think that's my problem. What about post-flop play? Or is this something I can only learn after seeing and playing many heads up games?
folding once is really too many, you need to take a lot of flops in Omaha

Thanks for the reply Eddie. The problem is that by the time it gets to heads up the blinds are up to about 1/5th your stack. After finishing second yet again, I think I've come to the conclusion that it's pure luck once the blinds get that high. I had my opponent on the ropes, drawing to a lo to get a split pot and he hit it. Then after going back and forth a bit, he had me on the ropes drawing to a lo and I missed it: Game over. He hit his, I missed mine, and that was the difference.

1/5 of your stack sounds like Party Poker. And in that case, its a pure crapshoot heads up. I don't think I would read anything into coming second twice in a row -- you could be the best heads up player in the world and you are going come in second two times in a row regularlly when the blinds are 1/5 of your stack.

Actually it was Paradise. It depends on how long the game takes; if people are busting each other left and right, by the time it gets heads up the blinds might still be manageable. But it takes a while to bust people out in Omaha 8, so it's more of a problem.Since we're on the topic, am I the only one that thinks there should be a restriction on raising the blinds past a certain point? I mean, you out play 10 other players for an hour or so to get into the money, and then the most important part is decided on a coin flip/crapshoot? And it's not just SNG's either, it's tournaments, too. Just stupid.[/rant]
