mia: what happened to 5 card stud?

Recommended Posts

I have been re-watching one of the greatest, if not the greatest, poker film in history -- The Cincinnati Kid -- and just wondering if anyone still plays 5 card stud like they do in the movie? I can't recall a time I have ever seen anyone playing 5 card stud outside of the movie, but that might just come along with being part of the recent poker craze and not being around the game for more than a year or so. Does anyone still play this in home games or maybe even somewhere online? Why don't you see 5 card stud as much? What happened to it?

prima poker has 5-card stud. i played it for a while, and showed a decent profit, but it was too boring and too unstable for me to keep playing.aseem

dealt to each person (ala 7 card stud)onecard down/one card up ::: one card up::::one card up::::::: one card down.used to play it all the time as a little kid. good way to get little kids to start thinking about strength of hands and pot odds. easy to play along.

fixed limit.PL or NL five card stud is ridiculous, doesn't work at all.basic strategy is to play only medium-high pairs, any ace-up with a decent hole card, or any ace-down with a decent up card. the reason i didn't like the game too much was that high-card often won the pot, and it just became ridiculous to hold A high and have no idea where you were if the other person had no pair on the board (often they were hidden).aseem

u lack knowledge. NL five card stud is the most dominating form of poker in East Asia. some of the top ranked pros in asia have millions in wealth. just to justify the skill level in NL five card stud, the top 10 pros dominate all the major tournaments in Asia.in NL holdem an amatuer might beat a pro once in while but in NL five card stud, an amatuer's chances are 0.

The 5stud on Ladbrokes (and, I think, by association, Prima) deals the 5th card face up leaving just one card face down. If I remember correctly, that's how it's done in the film also.

my mistake for saying NL 5-stud doesn't work, i had never heard of it being played in asia, by professionals for that matter.and yeah, 5th card is face up, technically, but i have seen it played face down as a variation to add a little more skill/surprise in the game.aseem

i think jonny moss played nl 5 card stud in his famous 4 month poker marathon at binion'she lost about a million on one hand when his opponent made a pair of jacks on the riverThere's a local game in my town were they play no-limit but they also have 4card strts and flushes (which beat a pair) Its the hardest game in my town but then again its Ottawa

its a great game because bluffing is key.when i have a K on the river, and my opponent is showing a pair of jacks.... i can take the pot away if he has half a brain. there is alot of strategy in a very simple game (isnt that always the best)... i see it is the high stakes checkers of poker. its a very simple game, but you can use infinite strategy.

I played a little 5 card stud Söko, there is a little more action in that form since you can win with a four card straight and a four card flush, they both fit in between one pair and two pair, I think quite a few swedes play it, no1poker.com has it.

Hi,You can pretty much get a 5 card stud game going all the way up to 5/10 on www.bodog.com. This isn't your party poker or poker stars or prima, since it's primarily a sportsbook, but there seems to be a small bunch of players keeping the 5 stud tables going. All bonuses on the site are an instant 10% added to your account for EVERY deposit you make and they are RAKE FREE if you use the following referral code:Referral Number: P182A1D
