So, it's playoff time in the OSMHL. With the Ice Weasels (the team that Biatch abandoned), I missed our 3 round robin games, two because I was out of town, and the 3rd because I'm an alcoholic. But we somehow went 2-1 to make it to the quarter finals, I came back for that one on Monday night. We're the 4th seed, out of 6 in the division, but only top 4 play in the semi's, of course, 5 and 6 play a consolation game. In the first round, we draw the best regular season and playoff team. We open the scoring 1-0, then they tie it up 1-1. Then I get the puck one on one up the right hand side, I have my head up looking at the guy, slow down a bit, then kick it into top gear and burn him around the outside, protect the puck with one hand on my stick, the other pushing the d-man away, and throw a little fake in before roofing a backhander into a pretty poorly covered net to take the lead 2-1.The villains do come back to tie it, and actually come back to take a 3-2 lead before the unthinkable happens. We have all sorts of pressure in the final minute, the puck misses the net and ricochets hard back towards the front off the back boards. Minh knocks it down with like a soccer kick about knee high and then controls the puck, looks for something, but shovels it into the crowd at the net. Puck pops loose and Jordan buries it with 8.2 seconds left. We go to a 3 man shootout. I miss my shot to open it up, as do my two teammates, but Adam keeps the door shut, we go to extra shooters, where we can reuse the same guys. Jordan steps up and finally buries one, and Adam makes his save, and we're off to the semi's.===============Then tonight, semi final game vs the Roughnecks.Same story. Except they open the scoring with their ankle skating sniper. Kid can shoot like nobody else, but ankle skates for some reason. Anyways, he makes it 1-0. In the 2nd period (half), George ties it for us on a shot/pass to the front of the net from Louie. George picks it up and moves it over and beats the goalie with a backhand. But not long after, I'm in the defensive zone and spot that same sniper, I identify him as my man, but before I can even think, he gets the puck, it's off his stick, and into the net. I return to the bench with my head down. 2-1 bad guys.Final 90 seconds. Still 2-1, I'm on the ice with our next scorer, Jordan. We get it in and pressure for a bit, although don't get a great shot. Puck goes behind the net, and their defense thinks they have an easy clear. I rush in and knock the puck off and sweep it back behind the net, we jostle there for a minute and Jordan comes out with the puck. One of the two defensemen give me a little crosscheck to the back as the puck comes free, and I turn around and give a little back. They both decide to focus on me, leaving Jordan free to take a shot, although the 3 of us are battling for position in front. He whips a low wrister through the traffic and it bounces in and out of the net so fast, he didn't even know it went in. I did though, and I threw up my arms to celebrate. 2-2 with 60 seconds left.I head to the bench exhausted, and watch as we kill the final minute. Off to a shootout. It's me up first again, I look top left corner, but I don't get a very good shot off. The ice is in awful shape, and I think it jumped on me a little bit right as I was shooting. Wasn't even close. We go our full 3 shooters each, and again, no goals.Again, we go back to Jordan for #4, and he bricks, and Adam comes up big again at the other end.Minh looks to me, "Zach, you're up next".Byron turns to me, "Just do your man, man. Just go with your bread and butter, you got him."Usually I'm super confident in my breakaway skills, but after missing on Monday, and already missing today with a brutal effort, I don't know. Plus it's way too humid in the arena and my gloves are soaking wet, making the shaft of my stick extra slippery, and I'm not used to it.Anyways, I line and and bear down. Since we do simultaneous shooters, I start at the right side of the center ice circle. I bring it back to the left-center though, to come in with a bit of a better angle.I keep my eye on the goalie the whole way, he's backing in pretty good, but I don't care, I'm going to beat him with my move. I fake the wrist shot, pump it to the backhand and slide it into the empty side. The same move I completely missed on in Monday's shootout.I spin around with joy to see the linesman at the far end of the ice waving his arms and I know what that means.Adam closes the door for a NINTH straight time in the last two games, and WE ARE GOING TO THE LEAGUE FINALS!Sunday, 2 pm, Carleton Ice House. Be there.
LETS GO PITTSBURGH
Zach is right about pretty much everything.
