So I am helping a very rich friend of mine set up an online poker account. When I say friend I say it very loosey, he is a mear acquentence.I am going to start him off playing HU cash with me. I would rather it be hu plo as I consider it my best game, but he only knows nlhe. The problem is he doesnt know anything about poker. he knows the rules and he has played maybe 5 hours max of it in his life. This means no moves or anything of that nature, just straight abc poker, which is pretty hard to do in HU if youwant to make any money.Does anyone have any suggestions of how to go about playing someone such as him and howto extract the most money from him?

HU games are all unique, but if you're a decent player you'll notice ways to exploit your friend.

If I knew him better i would have a good idea of how he approches the game.Problem is I know almost nothing about him.And because of this I know almost nothing about how he approaches the game and abouthow he would play it. Is he a calling station, is he just a loose donkey? I dont know how wellhe would buckle under a big bet etc.

1) get friends to deposit money into online poker accounts2) get them to play you heads up3) profit!!!!i tell my friends not to bother with poker because unless they put a lot into it they will just end up losing money. could i perhaps be missing out on something?

So you're going to deliberately take advantage of a wealthy acquaintance by setting up a poker account for him and then convincing him to play you HU so you can take his money? Is there even a tiny bit of you that feels guilty about this plan?

Against someone else there may be a slight tinge of pain, but this guy uses words like "da" and "clubbin" and "da beat was soawesome @ da club late nite!". So no not really

Against someone who uses that kind of vocabulary, your taking advantage of him is more than warranted.Beating someone like you described should be really easy, but don't expect that just because you're a better poker player you'll be winning every pot and making every correct decision, even people who don't know how to play can still pick up hands, and sometimes play a more confusing style than more trained opponents.Work really hard on thinking about how he approaches the game. Given that he is very rich, and that he uses to words 'da' and 'clubbin', I wouldn't be suprised if he is a very spazzy player who makes a lot of donk bets and bluffs in really weird spots. If he's doing this, don't try to re-bluff him too much, wait untill you have a hand that fares well against his range then value bet/raise thin against him. He will only be thinking about his own two cards, so you can get away with playing a very exploitative style and make repeated moves that to you are obvious, but to him confusing.

Good post. The bolded sentence is especially good because someone on the internet, for once, used 'your' in the correct way. :club:

spot on, imo. the bolded part is so, so important. if you're "teaching him" or something, you should be able to get him talking about his thought (non-)process in the table chat or on AIM while you're playing and can get a pretty sick read right away.it's a common misconception that bad/beginning players have no logic to their play at all--it's not that, but just that their logic doesn't make sense to you because you're better than they are. everyone has reasons for playing the way that they do. it's just that sometimes those reasons are so weirdly justified that they seem indiscernible, but the great players are able to get in on even the most skewed poker logic.

well, if he's really new than his thought process is like this:1/2 NL HU"Oh i have K5. And they have the same color. Oh, what's this button. uhmm ohh, call $20? Ok lets see if i hit anything on the flop"flop gets dealt:Q 8 2."Hmm lets see.... mhmm.. doesn't look like I made a pair. Now these buttons pop up again... mhmm.. call $40? Hmmm lets see if i get something better on the next card"turn gets dealt:5h"lets see now.... hmmmm looks like i have 2 5s .... hmmm call $160 hmm.. i have a pair... lets call"river gest dealt:5s"hmmm he has AA... damn... i think i lost... lets get to the next hand"..."oh, the money came my way... hmmm thats good"next hand gets dealt:"lets see.... As3s..."flop gets dealt:Kh Qh 8h"hmm... i i can hit something on the next card...."and so on and so onNote that I'm not exaggerating at all. Maybe it's different with women but when I tried to teach my girlfriend how to play poker, i found out that her thought process was exactly like that. To sum it up: VALUETOWN. If he has really NO clue at all you can use overbets en mass.
