Advice For A Beginner?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm fairly new at this, so forgive me for my inexperience with poker and with forums. I'm pretty new to the game (seriously other than home games for about 8 months), and I have very little experience in live games and tournaments. I've read a handful of poker books to familiarize myself with the lingo, learn a little about the math, and see different perspectives about the game. I've played in a few live $1/$2 NLHE cash games and small buy-in tournaments. Other than that and playing in a lot of play money cash games online, that's about all I've got! I'm a student so it's been a challenge to get my kickstart in poker. (I've currently set a goal to devote one or two days a week to just play in live games or tournaments).

Fairly soon there will be a WSOPC event coming close to where I live, and I'm planning on going just to see how a big event like that works and what it is like. My question is, should I try playing in a satellite, still being a very unexperienced player? I feel pretty naive being at a very low level, but at the same time I feel like it would be a great opportunity to get a feel for what it's like to play in something like that.

Any suggestions on if I should try and play, or what else I should do before even considering?

Thanks, and again please forgive me for any ignorance!

Also remember that Satellites and tournaments play differently because of the different payout structures and objectives so a super sat requires a different strategy than a regular tournament for example.

One thing to keep in mind is that one table sats are often the toughest tournaments you will find if the winners are able to sell off the entries that they win. There are a lot of one table specialists from online who populate one table live satellites.
