In his blog Daniel said this,

"Now, Tom McEvoy is most certainly a nice guy, and I think that's one of the key reasons he was inducted last year, despite their being more qualified candidates based on the criteria."

I fully understand this statement coming from a 40yr old man like Daniel who was only 9 - 12 yrs. old during 1983 to 1986. I lived in Vegas during those years and believe me Tom McEvoy was probably the #1 public face of poker in Vegas during those years. He seemed to be everywhere with regard to poker in those years (even more so than Doyle, IMO), and even a few years after that. He has been somewhat under the radar for the last 15 or 20 years although he did win the WSOP tournament of champions a few years ago and he still wrote several books the last 15 years or so. Yes, I would say anyone who lived in Vegas during those years will probably understand how Tom got in.

But once again I fully understand how people under 45 or so might be perplexed by McEvoy getting in. (I guess it's a generational thing).

Tell me more about Tom McEvoy!!!

He use to always wear a cowboy hat and carried a brief case to the table during those years. He really got into it all after he won the main event in 1983. Doyle was 3rd that year after winning in '76 and '77. I would see McEvoy in poker rooms around town more than any other player. He just seemed to be everywhere during those years and was a regular contributor to the magazines. He also was the biggest proponent to end smoking during tournaments. As I said before, imo he was the #1 face of poker from 1983 to about 1986. Then over the years he kind of faded into the background as the new generation came in. But I see no problem with him being in the HOF given how much of a force he was in the mid 80's. I'm sure the old timers like Doyle and TJ Cloutier agree he should be in.

I disagree with Daniel here (I mean in the relevant blog entry), and that's very rare.

I believe, and think Doyle does too (he did say "ALL the criteria"), that players should be subject to rule #6 as well:

"Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results."

I don't say that to get rid of anybody, but players who satisfy the first five, PLUS the sixth? Well I think they deserve it more.

And IMHO that includes Daniel.

ETA: Why do I think rule #6 should apply? ETHICS. Pure and simple. The HOF should endeavor to promote and maintain a high level of public trust, in an effort to protect the game and its image, and encourage new players into the game.

If I had a Poker Hall of Fame vote I would nominate Bruno Fitoussi and John Duthie in the builders category. Player category: John Juanda.

I mean this whole thing is silly anyways. The hall of fame should be about the best poker players and realistically that would be these psycho high stakes foreign guys who wear scarves and neon green sunglasses.

But it is going to be old people who won something "back in the day," people who won a major tournament on TV between 2004-2009 when poker on TV was in its hey day, or people who are the most known player in their country which makes them an "ambassador." Meet any of those criteria and HOF for them.

Let's view the poker hall of fame for what it is.... silly

They should just not call it the hall of fame and call it the poker ambassador award

I wonder how much hall of fame candidates like Mike Matusow or Jennifer Harman has won overall in their career if you take out endorsement money and buyins that they didn't have to pay for

No offense Jenn love you!

This is the key..Nobody knows how much a player has won over the years...We all know how much they have cashed for in tournies, but the player could be a losing player overall..

Steve Ruddock thinks we should have 7 or 8 inductees every year (like the Football Hall of Fame) to catch up with the backlog from this and past eras.

I don't know about 7 or 8 but how about 4 inductees each year to catch up?

I stopped reading at "by itself McEvoy's poker resume is far from hall of fame worthy"

No I'm trying to make a point that this is the Poker hall of fame not the poker ambassador award. Give McEvoy the poker ambassador award at the wsop, make him up a nice trophy or bracelet. He is not a poker hall of famer. If being a poker ambassador is going to stay in the criteria for the HOF that is fine, but even with that, with the list of eligible people McEvoy should be at the bottom of the list.

Ok then, let's make him the recipient of a poker ambassador reward. So now he an award winning poker ambassador who just happened to have won the main event by way of a satellite (way before Moneymaker), has 3 other WSOP bracelets, and was the #1 face of poker from 1983 to 1986 (not to mention his 11 books , winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions, and being instrumental in the banning of smoking from tournaments)

McEvoy is a perfect example of why a poker hall of fame is so absurd. McEvoy has a ton of accomplishments, has written a ton of books, and I've played with him and I wouldn't stake him in a 10-20 LHE based on his tight weak play. I'm sure there are innumerable players who have won millions in life time cash game earnings, who because they don't play in tournaments or the biggest games would never be considered for the HOF. I'm not just talking about online players in the past 10 years you don't know. I'm talking about live grinders, in places all over the country. Those are the real "hall of famers" i think, the people who are actually +EV in almost every game they play in.

Like, for example, Bob. Bob's never (likely) Going to be in the poker hall of fame. Yet, I'd stake him in a high stakes LHE game infinitely before I would McEvoy in any game or tournament. So.. what does the hall of fame REALLY mean?

I don't know about staking me in a high stakes game but mid stakes probably wouldn't be a bad investment.

I wonder if McEvoy's tight play was mostly because he was acting as a prop. When I played in a 20/40 limit game with him in LA he was a prop at the card room and I got the impression that he thought recreational players might not like playing against somebody who was too aggressive.

Either that he was just really weak tight in a limit holdem cash game.

He was a great prop though in the sense that he represented the casino well by greeting me (who he knew was a stranger to the room) while we were waiting for the game to start. He introduced himself as Tom and told me that he was a prop in the game, he didn't say anything about his last name or that he was a former WSOP champion.
