If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

A bigwig at our custodian basically told me I need to do it. He is in the same boat, optimizing service with the production mindset.

I may just pitch doing the green belt to start, with the intention of letting it expire.

Color me corrected.

So I’m mostly through the “one on one” manager tools podcasts. I am doing monthly meetings with my boss currently. I broached the idea of going weekly and shorter duration today, and we are giving it a shot. I don’t have any direct reports, so this is pretty much the only way for me to try it out.

My boss seemed amused more than anything. Told me I need a hobby, if this is my after hours listening (not in a shitty way).

If he even takes it half serious I think he'll see the dividends. He'll be more clued in with less need for "drop ins" by either you or him. It'll be an interesting thing seeing it implemented from the "bottom up."

Huge game tonight between bitter enemies. Gonnabd tough because no team gets calls like Iowa State and it's crowd of boo birds. But KU will overcome, I have faith.

from the paper today:

Hilton Magic: Iowa State has the No. 1 home-court advantage in the nation according to Ken Pomeroy’s measure — an impressive feat considering this spot usually goes a team that has more of an elevation advantage. Over the last 60 home and road conference games, Iowa State is also No. 1 in the nation in foul differential at home (negative-5.4 per game).

you're damn right i am. but i think it would be hard for any iowa state fan to deny that its crowd boos every foul call against it as though it was a tragedy of shakespearian proportions. i can understand the occasional booing of a call, but iowa state boos every single foul call against its team. every one. that crowd thinks iowa state hasn't committed a foul since 1934.

Don’t officially have today off, but took it off due to not sleeping great, and being in a real bad mood.

My company has this problem of executives casually empowering people to do things outside of established structure, and it finally happened to me. This guy comes up to me, posturing as my boss, tells me the president insinuated that he should handle this big transition, and says he wants me to manage the CRM piece under his overall guidance.

He’s not in operations, but just won employee of the year based on investigating software for some other area. Doesn’t write code, has no idea how my software supports the CRM, etc. I basically just escalated it to the COO and stepped away from the situation, hoping to salvage a working relationship with the guy. I don’t think there was any thought put into what he was saying to me.

The situation reminds me of my last job, the situation 4.5 years ago. I automated a task that represented 50%+ of a senior position’s responsibilities, and at my boss’ encouraging, applied for the position when it became available. The company then gave the spot to someone else, and asked me to train that person to use my software. I left that group within a month, and the company within 2-3 months.

it is beyond comprehension to me that companies will do that. i mean asking you to train someone on software you designed is ridiculous. you have to wonder if they are malevolent or incompetent because obviously you can do the job and obviously they didn't care. but i guess at least you knew exactly what the game was.

The department was partitioned between two leaders with equal clout, and they had an alternating system of choosing promotions. So I heard, anyway.

Based on having done that kind of work for two successive groups, I was immediately given the promotion in another area. I am sure everyone knew that would happen as soon as I met the HR requirements to switch jobs (“free agency” per se).

I’m glad it worked out the way it did, because I’d almost certainly be worse off right now if I had stayed in the accounting track with my resume.

I was asked to do this disaster of an RFP a few weeks ago, and last week I set up a meeting with all the involved parties to go over our game plan for the next one.

Typically it would not have been my job to do this RFP, but our timeline was brutal. We have a person who would generally be responsible, but she did not have availability or something. Of course, this didn’t stop her from being hostile and territorial, trying to undermine and call into question my judgement.

Anyway, I invited like six people to our lessons learned meeting, and it got expanded to 10 by request. Two people actually showed up, and the person who desperately wants ownership of all RFPs said she would be “a few minutes late.” We chatted for about 25 minutes and gave up.

Afterwards, someone asks if I’m going to set up another meeting, and I just laughed at them. Good lord, I feel bad for anyone relying on that team to produce an RFP.

My boss informed me today, after I told him I suspected such, that they will be giving bonuses to everybody at next weeks “holiday” party but he didn’t give me the exact dollar amount but he said to not get my hopes up. I said I suspected they might announce a $1k bonus similar to other companies and he’s like well, I can tell you that everybody will be getting the same amount but that “it might cover one of the Apple earpods” id been talking about maybe getting. So I’m expecting around $200-500. Which, I don’t want to sound ungrateful but when we had a record year and exceeded NI budget by millions id almost prefer they didn’t give us anything. Like, I’m sure the part time tellers making $12/hr will appreciate it more than I will but, yeah. Better than nothing, I guess.
