Off Topic, Kinda.....

There are many issues I have with this for sure but to press charges on a 10 year old? You're in the wrong profession. Quit, say you don't think it's working, maybe different type of care is needed but to consciously decide to go to police department and file a report on a 10 year old is ridiculous.

Some lighthearted talk here plus this will make sure that I can read this again sometime as it's a good story, at least for me. If it wasnt for posting all those apartment stories I would forget almos

I debated posting this, because I might be overdoing this topic this week, but I made a sort of personal promise to myself that I am going to promote more positivity and try to never be negative or pu

Sigh....

I don't even know where to being with that video. The whole thing is just so off.

Dale's line about a gun sure hits home for me!

I'll add one thing though, for any Canadians reading this and dismissing it as a crazy 'merica thing.....you may be surprised to know how awful our own public school system is in dealing with special needs kids. Its absolutely atrocious, and while we may not have a video of police handcuffing a 10year old and taking him to a car, the people who are entrusted with these kids during the day in the public system we all pay for, are so woefully ill prepared to deal with special needs kids that its downright disheartening. Not every teacher/principal/supvsr, not every school, but many many are in Ontario and thats a fault of the system.

I was one of the lucky ones in that I was able to afford private school, or else our area school was so bad in the 2years my son went there, I had teachers+principals telling me that the school was not safe for my son, and he is very gentle in comparison to others on the spectrum. I pulled him out as fast as I could, and we were very lucky to find what we did.

The things I have seen and the stories I have heard from people close to me would make you weep. Its really sad how little the system tries to help those who need it the most.

Soooo an annoying person got very slightly annoyed and inconvenienced and so violently ruined another person's very expensive and valuable property, then left without dealing with or considering the consequences? I'm less than enthused with her heroics lol

Wayne, have you seen this?

my favourite part is at 1:24. sorry.

I am sure John and myself (long suffering Jets fans) remember all those drafts. I actually missed this years. Just got home from work

The best pick ever made for the jets was mark Sanchez. Why? We went to 2 afc championship games with him. The Sapp one I remember like yesterday. Keyshawn was no brainer

Mostly ignore the political aspects of this thread and focus on the core issue of lead. I really think that the removal of lead from paint and gasoline is the main cause of the worldwide reduction of crime that has been seen in all of Europe, N America and Australia and New Zealand over the last 30 years.

I don't know the science so Im no expert. The crime problem is so complex, I can't imagine there being one main reason.

This minimum wage outrage is a perfect example of what is wrong with society.

it will for sure close some restaurants and expect to see a lot more self service technology in fast food places like McDonald's has installed. A 20% increase in labour costs will put a lot of restaurants from a small profit to a loss. I was reading an article this week about how restaurants are struggling to maintain lunch business because the relative food costs between eating out and brown bagging it yourself is increasingly favouring the brown baggers.

I think the minimum wage should go up in real terms every year but a 20% increase in one year and then another 7% one year later is too quick a change.

I personally think an increase in the low income working refundable tax credit is something that is more effective in helping low income working people.

Yeah I see both sides of it. I agree that minimum wage is not a living wage, but I'd rather see the government/taxpayers take more of the cost of rectifying that situation (not sure how this would work in practice, just theoretically).

Each $1/hour increase costs businesses $2,000 per year per employee. Our business luckily won't be affected much, as my lowest paid employees (3 detailers) already make $14/hour, but that is still $6,000 per year in additional expenses, and that can be a huge number for a small business with a razor thin profit margin. We might actually have to drop an employee when this comes to Alberta, and it barely affects us. I can't imagine a restaurant that has 15-20 employees at minimum wage. The cost is massive.

expand the Working Income Tax Benefit. It is efficient and straight forward for the most part.

the Australian Dollar and Canadian Dollar are basically at par. Australia has a very high minimum wage of $17.70 per hour but with many exceptions for teenagers and experience in some types of industries. For example the minimum wage for an 18 year old is $12.09 and for a 17 year old $10.23.

Here are the prices at McDonalds there and remember that Australia doesn't have higher prices on Dairy and Poultry like Canada because of supply management.

Big Mac meal is $10.55 before tax.

Is a few (relative) places going out of business more

Important than giving people a living wage?

As in, if they close, are there fewer overall min wage jobs? Enough to have an impact? Or is the total gain by the vast majority who benefit from a higher min wage greater than that loss?

There should probably just be a different min wage for cities where cost of living is more expensive (and there's a huge demand for min wage jobs). Theoretically more demand for service economy jobs that would increase pressure on wages, but individuals working for min wage have exactly zero negotiating leverage, so...

Don't know. Random unconnected, poorly thought out questions and thoughts.

Oh, and we should look to places that have done this. How many Indy restos closed in Seattle. They have a $15 (US!) min wage (or are they still phasing it in?).

And yes, as Bob says, there are other ways to achieve similar outcomes that should be looked at.

I think there's a psychological effect here though. People feel more self sufficient and useful when they're paying their own bills from their wages, not waiting for a big refund check or whatever (which could also lead to poor spending habits as people would use that as a lump sump for some large thing rather than monthly expenses?).

Unconnected, potentially incorrect, rambling thoughts.
