Us Online Poker Regulation Since Black Friday Thread

Recommended Posts

I figured that we need a thread dedicated to information about proposed regulation at both the State and Federal level.http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/jun/1...fort-legalize-/Rep Joe Barton of Texas is now pushing for Federal Regulation of online poker. He's a pretty strong conservative so this is a very good sign for possible Federal Legislation. For those that don't know Barton he's the one who apologized to BP because the US Gov't was being mean to them over their leak in the Gulf.

http://www.gambling911.com/poker/online-po...end-061011.html...lol told ya!Of course I'll still believe it when I see it.
It's encouraging, but yeah... Normally these things happen in phases. We may get some legislation that says, "We're creating a commission to study the effects of online poker..." before the end of the year. Then once legislation is actually passed, there WILL BE a "waiting period" before it goes into effect, which will most likely be several months to a year, if not more. The purpose of the waiting period would be so that all of the B&M casinos can talk to each other and figure out how they can all make money at this. It will take time for them to make compacts, share information, etc.I will be pleasantly surprised if Americans are officially, legally allowed to play poker online before the end of 2012. I'm sticking with my earlier estimates. 10% chance this year. 30% chance next year. However, a few years from now, things could be pretty cool: TONS more fish, direct transactions from your checking account, and perhaps you could win an online satellite into your local B&M casino's weekly $200 tournament. There's a downside as well, but I'm going to be more positive today... :club:

see link for the rest of the articlehttp://www.nationaljournal.com/tech/barton...5fp-NzA;twitterBarton to Offer Online Poker BillBy Juliana GruenwaldUpdated: June 16, 2011 | 5:57 p.m.June 16, 2011 | 5:05 p.m.Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, is readying a bill that would make it legal for Americans to bet money on online poker.Barton said he was urged to act via Facebook by many of his constituents who play poker online and were upset by a federal crackdown in April on some online poker sites. Federal officials claimed the sites violated a 2006 law banning payments for online gambling and requiring payment processors to block payments for online bets.Barton, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, noted that online poker is not illegal but that processing payments for online poker is unlawful – a discrepancy he said in an interview “doesn’t make sense.” His bill would authorize payments for online poker games in states where such gambling is legal now. He said he would introduce the bill soon.Barton, who says he plays poker himself but not online, said he sees poker as different from other forms of online gaming. “Poker is a game of skill,” he said.Supporters of legislation to legalize online gambling argue that laws trying to stop online poker are ineffective and have done little to stop millions of Americans from gambling online via offshore sites. They say instead of trying to prohibit Internet gambling, policy makers should tax and regulate it to ensure that those who gamble online are protected. Barton said his bill would put in place rules to regulate online poker and prevent fraud.Supporters include the American Gaming Association, which represents many of nation’s biggest casino groups such as Caesars and MGM. In an interview last month, association President Frank Fahrenkopf said his group’s position on the issue has evolved from opposing all forms of online gaming to backing legislation that would fully legalize online poker now. He added that online poker is more acceptable than other forms of gambling because participants play against other players, not the house.“We’ve seen technology does exist … to really put in place regulatory regimes” that work, Fahrenkopf said.In the last Congress, the House Financial Services Committee approved legislation on a bipartisan basis sponsored by then-Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., that would legalize and set up a regulatory regime for online gambling in states where gaming is legal now. Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., has reintroduced a similar version of that bill with Frank, now the ranking member on Financial Services.see link above for the rest of the article

What companies are set up best to take advantage of this when it passes?
Caesar's Entertainment without a doubt will use their WSOP branding if this passes. They already have the start of an online infrastructure in place.

I'm pretty sure that the only organizations eligible to get a license are existing land based US casinos and race tracks and also some companies that supply gaming devices to land based casinos such as the slot machine manufacturing companies. The WPT which is owned by Party Gaming wouldn't meet that requirement.
