So, where are the girls?Whenever a woman does well in a poker tournament, we get a segment on how poker has traditionally been a game for men. The interviewer asks the player about her struggles to overcome biases in the poker world, and she talks about the advantages and disadvantages of her gender. We're told that women are making up increasingly larger parts of the fields and they're certainly racking up some WSOP bracelets in the process. A woman will likely win a WPT title before long. That said, I think they still represent a tiny portion of poker players.Pondering their under-representation in my field of work, I considered other hobby/work realms in which women are at a premium. If you're interested in poker, sci-fi, comics, engineering, computers, video games, etc, girls are thin on the ground. These are heavily male fields. So what are the heavily female fields? I can think of plenty where the genders are fairly equally represented, but I have a hard time thinking of more than a handful where there's a gender gap in the opposite direction. Dancing, education, modeling...that's all I can think of. Where are the rest?

I don't think it matters. Poker is not by anymeans a "Mans Game". The fact that there is so much hype about Women poker players is kinda shaming. When I sit down, I don't pay attention to gender.

I work for a large hospital, and about 85% of the RNs and other nursing positions that come through are female. I can't remember the exact number, but something like around 65-70% of the people in the organization are female. I work in a building with 80 people in it, and there are only 7 other males besides myself....

Ah, come on Mark: admit it. You graduated from IU with a degree in NonHomosexual Male Nursing, and you have spent the last few years in Grand Rapids crusading to end the rampant stereotyping of Dude Nurses. Even miles away in Kalamazoo I can hear your chants of:"We're male nurses/ hear us shriek! We might nurse/ but we don't like dick!Sure I know/ that doesn't rhyme! But we eat pussy/ all the time!"Even over the fireworks man. (pounding chest with fist, in order to imply solidarity) You tell 'em BROTHER!Wang

Nice....you know how hard you have to work to get through nursing school? I didn't have anywhere near that kind of work ethic when I was in college....I opted for the easy liberal arts degrees. The OP was simply asking what professions are there more females than males and from the 3,000 or 4,000 people that I have met in the medical field since I have started, I can say that a good 75% of them have been female. Wang, you will have to keep the music thread going for a little bit....having surgery and will be out of commission for at least a month. I will remember that little ditty you came up with though.

I did consider nursing, but I figured that the high-percentage of male doctors and EMTs might swing it back in the other direction...not to the point where it's even, mind you, but where's it not 'overwhelming'. Just seems like there are a lot more fields that are overwhelmingly male as opposed to fields that are overwhelmingly female.
