im not so sure the bet on the flop is thin. you have shit chances for high with five players. however if you knock some people out it starts to look not so bad. obv you are looking good on the low side. so combine these two things with the size of the pot...i wouldn't say you missed a bet as you are not betting exactly for value..but i do think you are giving up some of your equity in this pot by not betting the flop, and i am not sure that it is trivial.

thats kinda what i was thinking, good spot to thin the field out. plus it lets us rep more. people go ape sh*t sometimes in these things saying "you bet just a low you crazy idiot lag" not realizing betting to split a ton of peoples money in from preflop even with rake is slightly better to break even, and makes us much harder to read. people pick up on the fact that if you are only betting scoop kinda hands, they will never pay off. if we bet in spots like this, it is very easy for villains to read us as not "solifd" players. which in fact isnt true and will lose them money. like badly.

is this a situation where i want to push someone out? i know conventional thought is that fewer players increase my chances to win, but in this hand 1. it's almost guaranteed i'm giong to have to show my hand to win. there's no way that everyone else is going to fold 2. my mostly likely outcome is that i have the nut low in which case i want more people making bad calls (or nothing and it doesn't matter). so do i want to force out people that would may later call a bet with a bad low hand, or those who might hit a card on the turn for their high hand, which i'm not all that concerned with?

It's a good question. I would probably bet the flop because of position. I'd rather set the table to check back the more expensive turn to get the free card if we're still drawing to our low....or be able to continue applying aggression if my flop bet is able to isolate. Checking here definitely is not the worst decision though, because with so many players in the pot, there's a higher probability that the "free river card" won't work because so many high cards could hit that make high nuts. These are all defensive basises for betting. The offensive basis (along with the ability to continue barreling if you can isolate) is that you have the uncorruptable nut low draw and position.

I dont know, with this many people in and very little chances of scooping, you may want to keep more people around on the flop...

This is easily the most sensible basis for checking the flop. I meant to discuss this, but got lost in my response and had to wrap it up quick as someone came to door. The only problem therein is that you are in a tough spot to maximize value for that half of the pot, because you can't bloat the pot too much if you are in a quartering sitaution.Suffice it to say, I've played this situation both ways. I think a lot of it has to do with the table dynamic.
