Zach6668 513
And to be clear, you can Toewes rule call up ANY player on your farm if you choose to. He doesn't have to have played the amount of games that creates a forced Toewes rule call up. You can draft Rasmus Dahlin, for example, and make him a Toewes rule call up immediately. That's a change from last year. I lost $3 in cap space and a year of free use for both Colin White and Jayce Hawryluk. Now, if you take the bold risk of calling up a player early (more of what we want) you don't get double punished if he doesn't actually pan out and play in the NHL. What am I missing? Why would you do that? You can call up anybody you want for October and then make the decision whether or not to keep them.

You can't draft somebody and then Toews them to create room for another draft pick. You can call them up to your active roster in Oct and keep your option open to send them back to the farm if they get injured or sent back to Junior etc so that you don't want to keep them up all year. Both the guys you called up you could have designated as Toews Rule players and saved that money to use at the auction. You wouldn't have burned their "free" year.
Zach6668 513
The advantage of Toews'ing a player would be to open up a spot on your farm so you can make a draft pick, right? That makes sense to me now. Wish I could have done that a few years ago. I'd be one year behind where I am now in terms of contracts for Mark Stone and ... maybe someone else? Toffoli maybe. Yeah it's all about being able to carry more prospects where slots on your team are less valuable than slots on your farm. For me, I want as many prospects as possible so rather than dump them, I called up a couple way early. Sucks to waste a year of eligibility to keep them longer, but a bad team should want as many chances to develop a star player as it can get. I expect to call up 4 players next year who will HOPEFULLY be in the NHL. Roope Hintz Jonathan Dahlen Brett Howden Mitchell Stephens
Zach6668 513
See, allowing this kind of flexibility is good for the league, IMHO. We need to allow GMs to GM, rather than strip away their ability to make decisions on certain things. This is a good example. For me, because of my specific situation, I made the decision to keep Barzal down this year and next. Maybe not having him cost me a regular season title? It'll hurt me next year, but I still get him for October and the playoffs, and I just can't afford another $3.00, even at an Aho salary for the next 3 years. But, back when I had cash but no room on my farm, I was able to call up my cheaper prospects, which I believe I did with Mark Stone, and likely cheaper guys like Toffoli, before they became NHL stars. It's good to let GMs GM and make their own managerial decisions rather than forcing their hand. We've built in some necessary restrictions, but it shouldn't go much further, if at all. Zach6668 513
Actually, I promoted Stone, Toffoli, and Zucker in the summer of 2014... before the auction, so they counted against my cap, but I could make my draft picks. With the Toews rule modification, I can Toews them and not lose that $3.00 (combined). That's a good change.
Zach6668 513
Stone had played just 23 NHL games, Toffoli had played 72 games over two seasons, scoring 34 points, and Zucker had played 47 games over 3 seasons, with 12 points.

With the Toews rule modification, I can Toews them and not lose that $3.00 (combined). That's a good change. Correct. I burned $3.00 in cap space also calling up White and Hawryluk. Also burned a year of their eligibility. The goal is to have MORE young players called up, so this change is a way to at the very least, not cost you cap room at the draft if you take the very risky approach of calling up a farm player early. You shouldn't be punished for taking chances like that. The change was Bob's idea and it's definitely a positive one.
